In a recent press engagement, Thailand’s Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Srettha Thavisin, has firmly stated that the country is steadfast in its commitment to human rights, as evident from its resolute effort in providing aid to refugees hailing from troubled neighboring Myanmar. Thavisin, who occupied the limelight following his talks with Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) during the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) session held at the UN Headquarters, shared these noteworthy insights.
Thavisin emphasized that Thailand values human rights, a trait reflected in the nation’s unwavering support of peace conventions. Much to the country’s credit, it has also displayed its commitment to humanitarian causes, in the way it has stepped up to the plate to aid refugees during distressing times. Moreover, Thavisin affirmed that the nation maintains neutrality when it comes to the internal conflicts of its neighboring nations.
Guterres, the UN’s top representative, validated these sentiments, voicing his deep-seated concerns over the refugee plight. Thavisin assures him and the international community that Thailand is keen on heeding these concerns about the refugee situation and will act accordingly.
During the International Day of Peace commemoration on 21st September, Thavisin broached the topic of peace which has become especially touchy due to ongoing conflicts in various parts of the globe. However, he shared a positive note that the Secretary-General of the UN highlighted the unifying issue of ‘clean air’, which garnered universal consensus amongst the international delegates at the UNGA78.
Through the course of his conversation with Guterres, Thavisin also put forth the newly incumbent government’s key priority areas. These areas fall under the purview of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and work towards achieving that agenda. This is powered by the Thai Government’s pledge to bolster relations with the United Nations across all operational fronts and strengthen its proactiveness towards sustainable development goals and climate change initiatives.
Aside from this, Thavisin also expressed his hope to see a higher representation of Thai nationals in top-tier positions within the UN. On his part, Guterres applauded Minister Thavisin on his successful assumption of office and extolled the admirable partnership between the UN and Thailand. He also complimented the active role Thailand has been playing as a regional host to various UN agencies.
In a parallel development, MP Chulapong Yukate from the Move Forward Party, echoed Thavisin’s call during his recent plea to the government to enable international organizations to dispatch food, medical provisions, and other forms of humanitarian aid, for the welfare of the people of Myanmar suffering due to civil unrest in the Shan state.
