KHON KAEN – In a horrifying twist of fate, a Myanmar patient, who had been admitted for surgery, met a tragic end at the very place that was supposed to offer healing and hope. The serene atmosphere of Khon Kaen Hospital’s male surgery building was shattered when a shot rang out in the early hours of Friday. According to Pol Col Yotsawat Kaewsuebthanyanit, chief of Muang district police, the grim incident was promptly reported at around 1am.

The scene that met the police and forensic teams was one of despair. They found Kyaw Swar Aong, a 29-year-old patient, lifeless on a hospital bed with a fatal gunshot wound to his occipital bone. Lying inside a ward on the fifth floor, hope flickered briefly when hospital staff rushed him to the emergency ward. However, despite their frantic efforts, he was pronounced dead not long after.

Heartbreakingly, his Thai girlfriend, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted their shared life together. They both worked at a fishing net factory in Khon Kaen and had been partners for over four years. They carved out a humble life together in a rented room, far from the bustling city lights. She confirmed that he had no known disputes or issues with anyone. The only peculiarity was a loan of 12,000 baht he had secured from a coworker, for which he handed over his ATM card as collateral. It was a seemingly simple gesture of trust that now seemed to echo with ominous undertones.

She also shared that a medical team was set to perform surgery to remove the tumour discovered in his back on Friday. The hope of recovery was cruelly dashed by the callous act of violence.

Pol Col Yotsawat provided insights into the incident. The culprit, masquerading as a visitor, had asked a nurse for the patient’s ward number. Upon gaining access to the ward, the gunman cold-heartedly fired a single, deadly shot at Kyaw Swar Aong before fleeing the scene.

Efforts are now in full swing to track down the perpetrator. “Police are meticulously reviewing closed-circuit television footage and collaborating with the investigative team to unearth any clues about the suspect,” Pol Col Yotsawat explained. The primary lead points towards a Myanmar national, a co-worker at the same factory as the victim, who has since vanished without a trace and is suspected to have fled to an unknown location.
