The Interior Ministry is rolling out the red carpet for the much-anticipated launch of the Marriage Equality Act, which will take place next Monday at none other than the distinguished halls of the United Nations (UN) Convention Centre in Bangkok. It’s a date marked in the calendar not just for Thailand, but for lovers and advocates of equality across the globe. The dawn of January 23 marks a new chapter for the nation, as Thailand readies itself to enter the annals of history as a proud pioneer in the region—championing marriage equality with the very first legislation of its kind in the country.
Traisulee Taisaranakul, the passionate spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, shared the buzz surrounding the event, proudly detailing the collaborative efforts between the ministry and the Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA) to pull off this grand occasion. With a guest list that reads like a who’s who of important stakeholders, including 400 participants from various quarters such as government officials, esteemed UN representatives, foreign embassies, and the energetic media, the event promises to be both monumental and memorable.
At the helm of this inauguration is none other than Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who multitasks as a deputy prime minister, ready to make the keynote announcement of the day. The focus will rest on perhaps the most pivotal element of the new law: the nationwide readiness of registrars to seamlessly facilitate marriage registrations for same-sex couples.
In preparation for this monumental change, the DoPA has been tirelessly upgrading systems and refining regulations. Like a maestro fine-tuning an orchestra before the grand performance, they’ve adjusted computer systems and marriage registration forms to support same-sex marriage registrations without a hitch from day one.
One of the event’s crown jewels will be the ceremonial handover of vibrant flags to the governors of Bangkok and the other 76 provinces—a symbolic gesture underscoring unity and inclusivity. Additionally, a symposium will delve into the ever-important discourse of gender equality, offering fresh perspectives and fostering a dialogue that champions rights and opportunities for all.
Ms Traisulee passionately emphasized the event’s global and local significance, noting, “The event stands as a proud testament to the ministry’s dedication to fostering equality. It heralds Thailand’s unwavering commitment to gender diversity and the universal principles of human rights.”
Bursting with excitement, she hinted at yet another event slated for the landmark law’s implementation date—this time hosted in the idyllic surrounds of Krathu district, Phuket. At this picturesque venue, ten couples will set aside tradition and boldly embark on their marriage registration journeys, marking an important occasion under the watchful eyes of DoPA board members. In the backdrop of sandy beaches and azure seas, Phuket is poised to become a dream destination for same-sex couples eager to tie the knot in a land where love knows no bounds.
Reflecting on the journey, Ms Traisulee added, “Our ministry remains resolute in our support for the bill. We aspire to foster an environment that nurtures equality and ensures justice for same-sex couples across Thailand.”
The path to this milestone stretches back to a proposal laid down in 2001, which hit a hurdle under then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. But like all good ideas, it was rekindled and revamped in 2019 under Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s leadership, overcoming legislative challenges and persevering through political chasms.
After several twists and turns, it was finally triumph time when the Lower House passed the Marriage Equality Bill on March 27, and the Senate added its nod 84 days later. Sealed with approval, the bill stands proud in the Royal Gazette as of September 24 last year, marking a countdown to legal acknowledgment that brings the visionary dream of equality to the threshold of reality this coming January 23.
