In a high-profile turn of events, the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) has brought charges against renowned lawyer Sittra Biabungkerd, commonly known as Lawyer Tam, along with six other associates. The charges relate to a fraud case tied to Jatuporn Ubonlert, alias Madame Oy, leading to a significant court order for the group to reimburse 111 million baht. This hefty sum stems from a 72 million baht deception via an online lottery investment scheme and an additional 39 million baht from luxury car purchase scams.

The OAG’s disclosure emerged after receiving two investigative reports from the police on January 20, sparking the creation of a dedicated review committee, given the public’s fervent interest. The first of these cases sees 44-year-old Sittra and his 41-year-old wife, Patthitta, facing accusations encompassing fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy—serious charges under the Penal Code and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

Expanding the legal net, a second case ropes in the couple and five additional defendants, alleging fraud, deception, and the presentation of bogus documents damaging to others. The allegations trace back to incidents between February 16, 2023, and February 6 of the previous year and span across Thailand, Hong Kong, and even France. Recognizing the gravity of these allegations, the OAG emphasized the need for sweeping legal measures against all involved. Prosecutors have lodged formal indictments with the Criminal Court, which has scheduled a plea hearing for February 7 at 9 AM.

In a striking twist of fate reported by Bangkok Post, Sittra and his wife had been apprehended last November on a highway east of Bangkok. This arrest was a climax following Madame Oy’s accusation of losing a whopping 71 million baht to them. Hailing from Nakhon Ratchasima province, Jatuporn, it appears, is living the high life in France along with her French husband, bolstered by an impressive EuroMillions lottery jackpot worth several billion baht.

Interestingly, the police investigation led to the confiscation of Sittra’s assets worth over 70 million baht. The inventory includes a cash stash of 28 million baht, a luxurious residence tagged at 43 million baht, and a fleet of plush vehicles.

Intriguingly, this isn’t Sittra’s first brush with controversy. Back in April of last year, he pointed an accusing finger at former National Police Chief General Torsak Sukvimol, implicating him in bribery linked to online gambling networks. It’s clear that the stakes are sky-high in this legal saga, involving high-profile figures and large sums of money, leaving the public eagerly awaiting further developments.

This unfolding drama in Thailand has captured the attention of many, showcasing the country’s rigorous stance against white-collar crime while providing a glimpse into the complicated web of deceit and high-society controversies. Riding the wave of public interest, this case continues to be the talk of the town, sparking debates and drawing a wave of media scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s vibrant news scene remains as lively as ever. In other news, an Uzbek man found himself in hot water at Phuket Airport for overstaying his visa, while the city of Chiang Mai prepares for wildfire battles with ministerial backing. Elsewhere, in Pattaya, a tipsy Thai woman’s wild pickup adventure left 11 parked vehicles battered and bruised. With Bangkok’s tourism scene set to flourish again with an anticipated rise in Chinese visitors, it seems there’s never a dull moment in the Land of Smiles.

Indeed, whether it’s thrilling courtroom dramas or bustling newsrooms, Thailand consistently serves up a heady mix of intrigue, excitement, and vibrant happenings, leaving everyone on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in these compelling stories.
