In a startling revelation, the Corrections Department has announced the termination of one of its officials who is implicated in a fatal shooting. An encounter leaving a highway police officer dead and hurting another at the dwelling of an influential village headman, or kamnan, in Nakhon Pathom province on a recent Wednesday night has been linked to this official. Sithi Sutheewong, the director-general of the department, has identified the sacked official as Thitinan Intonwong.
Contrary to previous reports misplacing him at Khao Bin Prison, Mr. Thitinan was in fact stationed at the Ratchaburi Central Prison. As law enforcement closes in, the sacked official has been apprehended by the police.
Police investigations indicate that Mr. Thitinan is accused of masterminding a cover-up in the aftermath of the lethal shooting at a dinner party held at the residence of Praween Chankhlai, 35. As the kamnan of tambon Takong in Muang district, Nakhon Pathom province, Mr. Chankhlai’s house was the scene of the crime. It is here that Mr. Thitinan allegedly tampered with potential evidence by detaching a critical server from the closed-circuit television camera post-shooting.
In a bid to further ward off suspicion, it is believed that the removed server found its watery grave as the accused tossed it into a nearby water body, thus complicating the investigation.
In response to the incident, Mr. Sitthi has requested for a written confirmation of the arrest and custody of the fired official from the local police. Mr. Sitthi doesn’t plan to turn a blind eye to the situation either. Acting on duty, he has constituted a committee saddled with the responsibility of conducting a thorough disciplinary inquiry into Mr. Thitinan’s conduct.
Following the results of the probe, this first step of dismissial has been activated, and Mr. Thitinan’s employment contract with the government has been revoked, thus ending his tenure in the public service.
The director-general was clear in his stand and communicated that he would not pull strings to safeguard Mr. Thitinan should any criminal action be enforced by the police. His commitment to justice is praiseworthy, as he upholds the principle of fairness and equitability, no matter how bitterly the truth unfolds.
