In a fascinatingly unusual occurrence set in the heart of Surin’s Isaan province, a bewildered Thai homeowner found himself in the midst of an odd tale involving a thief who swiped his food cupboard. Now, this was no ordinary thief – abandoning the food pantry close by, thanks to an adventurous stumble into ‘muddy munch’. The hapless hero of our story, Weerayut Choowa, shared his peculiar incident with the Daily News.

Weerayut explained that he was no stranger to the petty crimes of the region – having previously seen thieves filch bags of rice and other agricultural yields. However, he was left dumbfounded when his kitchen cupboard, of all things, went missing. As daylight broke, Weerayut woke to find his cupboard had taken a hike, leaving behind smatterings of leftover food, a rice cooker, and assorted condiments. To add more absurdity to the tale, the lopsided cupboard had a broken leg, making it a rather unconventional item to steal.

Weerayut went on to describe that the mysteriously absconded piece of furniture measured in at about 1 metre in length and 1.5 metres in height. To single-handedly manoeuvre this sizeable item from his abode would require quite a bit of effort from the elusive thief.

Just as Weerayut was about to escalate the matter to the community leader and local law enforcement, a neighbour stumbled upon the cupboard, discarded near his own home. Alongside the furniture was a platform trolley belonging to the same neighbour, hinting that perhaps the thief had indeed acted alone, and had borrowed the trolley as a makeshift getaway vehicle.

Our protagonist surmises that the deception ended prematurely when the thief found the journey, a few hundred metres down a muddy road, too strenuous. The police investigating the scene were swift to collect fingerprints from the abandoned cupboard, hoping to use this to further their probe and eventually identify the culprit.

Interesting as this case is, it is not the first of its kind in Surin province. Another recent report involved a local man stealing 120 packs of skin-whitening products from a local 7-Eleven. The thief, driven by a desire to maintain his 35-year-old girlfriend’s glowing lustre, chose a thieving route to ward off the effects of time on her radiance.
