In the bustling city of Bangkok, a calamitous event unfolded yesterday, November 11, when an unfortunate Thai teacher met with a tragic fate, and a young learner found himself caught in a senseless act of violence. The incident took place on the ever-busy footpath along the Khlong Toey district. Tung Maha Mek Police Station got the alarming call at approximately 10 am, resulting in first-response officers promptly making their way to the chaotic scene.

Upon arrival, officers were met with a heart-wrenching sight: Thanasorn Hongsawat, a diligent and bright 19-year-old freshman from the renowned Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai Campus, lying perilously on the cold ground amidst a frightening pool of his own life force. With gunshot wounds to his chest and neck, his situation was critical. But curiously, a 30-centimetre-long knife lay beside the young man, a chilling reminder of the violence that had taken place. He was quickly whisked away to Chulalongkorn Hospital where his fight for life continues.

Just a short distance away, officers happened upon another unfortunate victim: a much-loved and respected 45-year old teacher, Sirada “Jeab” Sinprasert, of the esteemed local Praharuthai Convent School, also known as Sacred Heart Convent School. A bullet had struck Jeab in her forehead in the chaotic crossfire, leaving her grievously injured. Despite officers’ efforts to rush her to the MedPark Hospital, she met a tragic end en-route. The beloved teacher was fondly remembered as having been only a bystander caught in the crossfire before losing her life abruptly.

An eye-witness report was delivered by Sirachai Sittisornchai, a 60-year-old motorcycle taxi rider who witnessed the tragedy unfold in all its grotesqueness. According to him, a group of Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai Campus students were walking towards the Khlong Toey Intersection when suddenly, a motorcycle carrying two men pulled up. One man dismounted, took aim at Thanasorn, and the unthinkable happened. Though Thanasorn attempted evasion, the bullet hit Jeab.

The terrifying scene sent the other students scattering, leaving a wounded Thanasorn at the mercy of the merciless. The assailant fired upon him several times before returning to his accomplice, who coldly suggested confirming the demise of their victim. The gunman hesitated before aiming the firearm at Thanasorn’s head, then chose to point it towards his neck. Luckily for Thanasorn, the final round was never fired. After Sirachai appealed to their sense of humanity, the assailants fled the carnage.

The brave Sirachai shared that the assailant donned a dark blue jacket, jeans, and kept his identity concealed under a black balaclava. Seemingly encouraged by their experienced senior classmates, Thanasorn’s friends have asserted confidence in the theory that the suspects in question were not random assailants, but students from a rival university, thus making this tragic act a byproduct of student rivalry.

With a mission to bring justice for the victims and their families, dedicated officers relayed to the Thai press that they are inspectively examining every frame from the security cameras across the incident scene and its surroundings, aiming to hunt down the culprits behind this grievous act. The resolve in their pursuit signifies a strong stand against such campus rivalries and senseless acts of violence across learning institutions.
