It’s not every day that we come across a story that’s as warming as a puppy’s nuzzle, but here’s one that’s got the tails of pet lovers and environmentalists wagging in delight! The FMCG Asia Awards 2023 hailed Mars Petcare Thailand with the illustrious “Eco-friendly Initiative of the Year Award,” all thanks to their trailblazing ‘SWAP Recycling’ venture. It’s a shining testament to their unwavering commitment to ensuring that plastic packs don’t just end up as waste, but embark on new journeys of being recycled, reused, or composted.

In the lush landscapes of Thailand, a country where the smiles are as bright as the sun and the seas as clear as a canine’s conscience, Mars Petcare unfurled a groundbreaking ‘SWAP Recycling’ Initiative. This initiative gave a colossal high-five to sustainability. Pet owners were invited to engage in a unique bartering system—swapping their empty pet food packs for fantastic discounts on Mars Petcare delights like PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, CESAR®, and SHEBA®. This wasn’t just about spoiling furry friends; it was a revolution. There were barks of joy as the initiative saw a tremendous embrace in 2022, carving a path toward a more sustainable future.

Mr. Piyarath Amornchart, Asia Commercial Director of Mars Petcare Asia Pacific, voiced his jubilation by saying, “We’re over the moon to clinch this award. It’s not just a shiny trophy on our mantle; it’s a chorus of approval for Mars’ devotion to knitting sustainability into our business fabric. It’s a collaborative canvas painted with the determination of our partners and Thai pet parents.” The collective effort staunched the flow of over 7 tonnes of plastic waste, diverting it from the evils of mismanagement. It’s a pioneering step fitting snugly within the expansive portfolio of Mars’ Sustainable in a Generation plan—and it fits like a glove!

Where the story blossoms is in its community impact, as Mr. Ratchakorn Chenpattanapong, General Manager for Mars Petcare Thailand and Indochina, openly shares, “The crown jewel of ‘SWAP Recycling’ Initiative wasn’t just the accolade, but the heartwarming response from over 107,000 pet parents dotted across Thailand.” It involved more than a hundred pet havens, collectively spearheading plastic into a second life, reincarnating as whimsical, eco-centric objects like cat and paw-shaped paving blocks and benches shaped like bones. These reimagined artifacts now adorn the BMA Dog Park, intertwining utility with an eco-fabulous flair, while sprucing up the urban canine sanctuary.

Mr. Prapas Lueangsirinapha, the esteemed Director of the Environmental Office of BMA, expressed his gratitude, “Mars Petcare’s ‘SWAP Recycling’ initiative sails in the same direction as BMA’s vision. Together, we’ve cultivated a landscape where reducing plastic packaging waste and inspiring pet owners to segregate stew over environmental concerns.” He highlighted that these repurposed items dot another BMA Dog Park, symbolizing a flourishing partnership embroidered with sustainability and environmental stewardship woven into the very fabric of community engagement.
