Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has announced a special amnesty scheme, offering an ultimatum of 30 days to illegal gun owners. These individuals have been given a month’s respite to turn in their unlicensed firearms to the nearest police station. Upon the expiry of the grace period, they would be subjected to an aggressive crackdown. This declaration was made on Wednesday during a joint operation by a force of roughly 100 police personnel and other staff, who meticulously sifted through 21 different locations in Nakhon Pathom.
The team was successful in confiscating approximately 16 revolvers and 200 rounds of ammunition that were associated with a network mimicking mafia behavior. This operative network has links with last week’s incident where a highway police official was fired upon during a dinner event organized at the residence of a known local chieftain and constructor, Praween Chanklai, also referred to as “Kamnan Nok”.
Stewarding the one-month-long amnesty program, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs, Anutin Charnvirakul, will formulate an exclusive task squad, states government representative, Chai Wacharonke. This strategy is in line with Deputy Interior Minister Chada Thaiset’s nationwide drive to examine local heads connected with influential mobs to blacklist them ultimately.
Every region actively cooperates with the task, a tactical move by Mr. Anutin, following the unfortunate demise of Pol Maj Sivakorn Saibua, an esteemed officer of Highway Police Division 2 stationed in Nakhon Pathom, Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn explained.
Investigation sources reveal nine of the weapons were recovered from the domicile of Pol Sgt Maj Pisit Chiewpreecha, who Mr. Praween had allegedly approached Pol Maj Sivakorn to honor with an unprecedented promotional transition during the infamous party. Pol Maj Sivakorn’s refusal to award the special promotion led to unexpected fatal consequences.
Adding to the investigation, Pol Gen Surachate revealed the recovery of two vehicles suspected to have facilitated the culprits’ escape post the homicide from a company linked with Mr. Praween.
