The unfortunate incident took place on Saturday around 3pm, but it wasn’t until the following day, around 10am, that Ryan was discovered. His final resting place was amidst the relentless flow of the stream, entwined between the unforgiving rocks atop the third tier of the scenic waterfall.
The rescue team had embarked on an arduous journey, scaling approximately two kilometers of rugged terrain from the base of the falls to reach him. Dressed only in black shorts, the marks of his downfall were evident: a fractured skull and a shattered elbow told a silent yet harrowing tale of his fatal misadventure.
Phunchid Khamloon, the acting disaster prevention and mitigation chief of Koh Samui, recounted the day’s harrowing events. Reportedly, Ryan had been amongst a group of friends, including his girlfriend, who had ventured beyond the prescribed bounds of safety. They had braved the elements to reach the fourth tier of the waterfall—an area declared off-limits. The tempestuous waters, strengthened by the recent persistent rains, proved to be an unforgiving adversary.
Ryan’s fall from grace was precipitous; a 10 to 15-meter drop from the fourth tier to the third. Above him, the six-tier waterfall ascends majestically to around 80 meters, evoking awe and reverence in equal measure.
