In the heart of January 2018, a bastion of maritime healthcare was established. The Khao Lak Medical Corner, a beacon of hope for seafarers and coastal dwellers alike, was founded with the primary mission of responding to marine incidents and delivering emergency medical services. They provide aid when the tumultuous waves turn rogue or when ill-fated accidents occur on the unforgiving sea. Furthermore, they go beyond just immediate emergencies, offering advanced disease diagnosis and arranging expeditious patient transfers to well-equipped hospitals for timely treatments.
The core services offered by this illustrious medical centre span a versatile array. Emergency accident care forms the backbone of their services, a safety net for those faced with unforeseen calamities. Radiology forms another major pillar, with the centre providing preliminary CT scan services to accelerate the diagnosis process. They also extend an olive branch to the realm of general health with check-ups for both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
However, all of these services are not the center’s only contribution to society. It has also assumed the role of a provincial-level medical marine operations centre, acting as a hub for sea and island disaster victims and coordinating efforts with relevant agencies for a streamlined and efficient response. The clinic’s network involves giants like the Similan Islands National Park, disaster prevention and mitigation agencies, Kuekkak Municipality, Navy Base 3rd Fleet, and the police.
The year 2022 witnessed a surging wave in the number of service recipients at the Khao Lak Medical Center, particularly during the peak tourist season spanning from November to April. The easing of pandemic restrictions breathed new life into the tourism industry leading to an increase in tourist arrivals, and consequently increased activity at the centre.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports released data presenting an optimistic picture of increased tourist arrival in Phang Nga, a number totalling an impressive 1.4 million from January 1 to June 30. This influx of visitors had a buoyant effect on the local economy, generating revenue of approximately 6.34 billion baht.
Simultaneously, to ride the wave of accelerating growth and with an eye on the future, Khao Lak Medical Center has set its sights on the burgeoning health tourism sector. With a carefully planned strategy, the center aims to expand its service platter, thereby increasing revenue and playing a significant role in boosting the country’s economy.
When the world turned the calendar page to August 11, 2023, an impressive statistic underscored the impact of the Khao Lak Medical Center. An astounding total of 53,803 patients have been under the nurturing care of the centre, including 38,271 Thai patients and 15,532 foreign patients, showing the centre’s global appeal. Health concerns like feebleness due to fever, the discomfort of a cold, the annoyance of gastritis, inconvenience of indigestion, and bouts of dizziness were the commonly treated ailments. Approximately 600 cases per year were identified as critical and severe, requiring rigorous medical intervention.
The Khao Lak Medical Center exemplifies all the virtues of a world-class medical facility, standing as a paragon of healthcare services, not just for the people living on the coastline of Thailand but for the millions who chose it as their travel destination.
