However, the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic transformed this landscape, leaving it barren of the joyous spectacles of international travelers. With the world now healing, countries such as Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand are twirling in a strategic dance to reclaim their share of the international tourism pie.
Japan: Rising Like the Sun
The land of the rising sun was to be the host of the epic 2020 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic thwarted these dreams. But in spite of a shotcomings, Japan witnessed the return of 17,374,300 international tourists within the first 9 months of 2022 indicating a promising rise in tourism.
Japan, which has always maintained a high safety reputation, success is largely attributed to a myriad of factors. A weakened yen and an array of enchanting tourist destinations have played vital roles. Simultaneously, strategic tourism promotion techniques and comprehensive coverage through an extensive railway network have boosted the tourism industry.
South Korea: A Wave Attracts
South Korea, on the other hand, is riding the crest of the ‘K-Wave’ to pull in tourists. The country has baptized 2023-2024 as the “Year of Visiting Korea” and launched “100 Korean Tourism Activities” campaign to open the doors of Korean culture to visitors. They’re leading the ‘Smart Tourism’ where mobile applications contribute to enhance the tourist’s experience.
Counting on its cultural prowess aka K-culture, South Korea plans to welcome 10 million and 17.5 million international tourists in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
Vietnam: In the Shadows No More
Vietnam, once a wallflower in the tourism scene, is now a star on the ascend. Powered by natural resources and captivating man-made attractions, it’s poised to be a formidable contender among top Asian destinations. Statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) project the influx of tourists in 2023 to tip the scales at a considerable 12-13 million.
Thailand: Jewel of the East
Thailand refuses to be left behind in this race. With the Thai government positioning tourism as a linchpin of its economic upliftment, their eyes are set on a 100% recovery target. By 2024, they intend to boost their tourism revenue by attracting 35 million international tourists and notch up 3 trillion baht in the coffers.
Thailand has even implemented a PASS strategy to bolster tourism which focuses on developing partnerships, digital acceleration, exploration of sub-cultures and immediate efforts toward sustainable tourism.
Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, emphasized that augmenting natural attractions with man-made marvels like Disneyland and Universal Studios is paramount to optimizing the tourism industry. These recreation hubs generate not only increased revenue but also elevate the international impression of Thailand.
Suffice to say, Asia is ready to welcome tourists wholeheartedly once again. Buckle up for a journey filled with rich history, vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes as you soak in the warmth of the east.
