Unfolding meteorological conditions have prompted the Department of Mineral Resources to issue an alert for the probable occurrence of landslides and abrupt flash floods across four provinces in Thailand, spanning August 7 to August 9, 2023. This comes on the heels of torrential downpours that surpassed 100 millimetres within a brief 24-hour window, causing significant saturation and instability of soil on various hillsides, rendering them prone to landslides.
Citizens and volunteers from the Department of Mineral Resources` disaster prevention network residing in the provinces of Nan, Mae Hong Son, Tak and Kanchanaburi have been strongly urged to maintain a state of high alert for possible landslides and flash floods throughout this time frame. This advisory extends notably to areas that are historically susceptible to landslides including Bo Kluea, Pua, Chaloem Phra Kiat, Thung Chang, and Chiang Klang in Nan province; Mueang, Pai, Pang Mapha, Mae La Noi, Khun Yuam, Sob Moei in Mae Hong Son province; Mae Ramat, Mae Sot, Tha Song Yang, Phop Phra, Umphang in Tak province, and Thong Pha Phum, Sangkhla Buri in Kanchanaburi province.
The rainfall in these areas has been excessively heavy, exceeding a whopping 100 millimetres within a succinctly rapid 24-hour timeframe, accompanied by a three-day accumulated rainfall topping 300 millimetres. As a result, the soil moisture content on the hillsides has critically surged, pushing the risk of landslides to an unprecedented high.
In light of the current situation, the department has issued advice and instructions to disaster prevention network volunteers to stay vigilant, particularly keeping an eye on the rainfall and its accumulative impact on the terrain. They are required to be proactive in case of emergencies – alerting the local villagers about the looming risks of landslides and flash floods, and providing timely updates to the concerned agencies, adhering strictly to the established emergency monitoring plan, as per a report by KhaoSod.
Looking ahead, the average maximum temperature predicted for Bangkok for the next fortnight hovers around a warm 32 degrees Celsius, with a peak temperature of 34 degrees Celsius expected to grace the city on the afternoon of Friday, August 28. Meanwhile, the average minimum temperature will hit around 27 degrees Celsius, potentially plunging to 25 degrees Celsius in the dawn of Tuesday, August 25.
