In a disquieting disclosure by the United Nations (UN), a recent study has laid bare an alarming upswing in the murders of women and girls on a global scale, reaching a frightful new record with approximately 89,000 lives abruptly ended last year. This distressing statistic is tantamount to the most elevated annual death toll witnessed in the last two decades, sending palpable ripples of alarm throughout the world community.

This worrying development, revealed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in conjunction with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), underscores an increasing pattern of deliberate murder of females—a phenomenon also known as femicide. What’s more striking is the fact that this has been increasing even in the backdrop of a general decrease in overall murder rates globally.

An astounding 55% of these deliberate female homicides, the report discloses, were perpetrated by family members or intimate partners. This chilling revelation serves to dismantle longstanding notions of home as a safe haven for women and girls. Interestingly though, the investigation also brought to light a counterintuitive element – only 12% of male killings transpire within the confines of the domestic sphere. This underlines the acute vulnerability that women encounter within spaces they presume to be safe.

The Executive Director of UNODC, Ghada Waly, presented a somber statement on the concerning increase in intentional female murders. She underscored that this perturbing evolution acts as an urgent wake-up call, signaling persisting societal hurdles linked with entrenched inequality and violence perpetrated against women and girls.

Waly further amplified an urgent summons to action, asserting that governments from every corner of the globe must channel more resources into the formation of robust and proactive institutions. She advocated that these mechanisms play a crucial role in putting an end to impunity, bolstering defences, and providing all-encompassing assistance to victims. Such aid ranges from primary responders to those within the judiciary. The intent is to interpose and curb violence before it has an opportunity to cascade into a freefall, as reported by Sanook.

This urgent appeal from the UN serves as a sobering wake-up call to societies worldwide, motivating immediate measures to curb the terrifying surge in femicide and safeguard the physical and emotional security of homes for women and girls. The struggle against inequality and violence endures, beckoning a collective, concerted effort to protect lives and establish a future devoid of fear.
