Ice Cream Vendor Rivalry: Prachin Buri’s Chilling Clash Turns Criminal

In an unexpected twist of fate, a Thai ice cream vendor found himself handcuffed rather than dishing out his usual frozen delights. This unusual and rather chilly incident unfolded in Prachin Buri province, where the sweet life of selling ice cream turned bitter for two vendors ensnared in a bundle of rivalry and rage. It’s a tale that’s truly stranger than fiction.

On what seemed to be just another balmy Saturday evening, Phattanarin, a 47-year-old ice cream seller, was minding her own business, cruising on her motorcycle when calamity struck near Sam Thahan Intersection around 8:30 pm. Out of the blue, a gunshot rang out, breaking the typical serenity that one might expect in such a setting. The shot didn’t miss its target, landing on Phattanarin, who, although wounded, managed to maintain her composure and now rests in stable condition.

As it turns out, this wasn’t an act of random violence. No, it was an ill-conceived expression of fiery competitiveness, as the alleged shooter, Sommai—an ice cream vendor himself at the ripe age of 64—harbored a simmering grudge against Phattanarin. Earlier that day, harsh words and accusations flew like snowflakes in a blizzard, with Sommai fiercely claiming Phattanarin encroached on his designated turf. A threat was made—fiery, dramatic, and unfortunately, all too real.

The dramatic clash was caught on video thanks to a dashcam from a passing vehicle. It shows the unsuspecting Phattanarin, her motorcycle and sidecar trundling innocently ahead, when Sommai swooped in, driving a sedan. What followed resembled a scene straight out of an action movie but tragically all too real—a gunshot, a wild veering vehicle, and a crash that nobody expected on what should have been a routine riding shift for selling sweet, creamy wares.

Slick escape plans unraveled as police followed the crumbs back to Sommai, who confessed to the spine-chilling crime like someone unrepentantly owning up to stealing the last cookie from the jar. He revealed, with unsettling nonchalance, that he had disposed of the firearm somewhere along the road—a weapon he’d procured years before, smuggled like a prize from Cambodia. In his confession, Sommai spun a tale of recurring friction, claiming that Phattanarin had threatened to unleash her own brand of vengeance upon him. This flimsy defense seemed feeble in the face of his admission.

Sommai’s freedom melted away faster than his ice cream on a hot day, as he was brought before Kabin Buri Court the day after the incident, with charges to match his actions. The charges were weighty—a count of illegal firearm possession, and another of attempted murder. If found guilty of the former, he faces up to a decade of staring at gray walls, alongside a monetary penalty of 20,000 baht, or both. As for the latter—attempted murder under Section 288 of the Criminal Code—it opens the pandora’s box of potential penalties, from a long domicile in the big house to life, or even irreversible consequences.

This clash of the ice cream vendors has left a sour note resonating beyond the local community, echoing across news outlets as a bizarre episode of conflict-turned-crime that one might have thought plausible only in fiction. Yet, as the thick court proceedings grind forward, one can only reflect on the extraordinary turns a day in the life can take when simple competitive fervor spirals out of control.

This is crazy! Who shoots someone over ice cream sales? Makes me question humanity.

    • Mary B June 16, 2025

Right? Competition is one thing, but this just crossed the line!

      • TomK June 16, 2025

I wonder what drove Sommai to take it this far. Makes you think how little things can escalate.

    • john_d June 16, 2025

People are losing it. Money pressures make folks do wild things.

This rivalry-reminds me of those old Wild West stories; a real-life ice cream shootout!

    • Lisa June 16, 2025

Haha, I can imagine a cowboy hat perched on top of Sommai’s head! But seriously, it’s tragic.

      • Historian10 June 16, 2025

Absolutely. We romanticize these tales, but lives are seriously affected.

  3. Randy32 June 16, 2025

Imagine your biggest fight being over ice cream routes. Can’t stop laughing.

    • grower134 June 16, 2025

Funny ’til someone gets hurt. Phattanarin’s wounds aren’t a laughing matter.

  4. SkepticSam June 16, 2025

I don’t fully buy Sommai’s confession. Who just admits so easily?

    • Ali B June 16, 2025

Maybe he thought it was a done deal. Or there’s more to the story than we know.

      • SkepticSam June 16, 2025

Could be intimidation or coersion. The investigation leaves many questions.

  5. KateCakes June 16, 2025

Both vendors made threats? Seems like this was brewing for a while.

    • NancyL June 16, 2025

Exactly! It sounds like the pressure boiled over. Market competition is brutal.

  6. AdamGreen June 16, 2025

Should face full punishment. Gun violence, especially over business, needs zero tolerance.

  7. EcoWarrior June 16, 2025

They should ditch guns and start a free-ice-cream competition for peace.

    • Sam W June 16, 2025

Great idea! Building community spirit over conflict.

  8. YoungMind June 16, 2025

Guns are dangerous. They could use fists like in school fights.

    • MaxB June 16, 2025

Even fists aren’t the answer. Mediation is key.

  9. EducatedEllie June 16, 2025

This situation highlights the failure of societal mechanisms to address conflicts. More focus on mental health is needed.

    • RealDeal66 June 16, 2025

Mental health services are essential but underfunded. That needs changing.

  10. TomK June 16, 2025

And don’t forget, Sommai will face a tough legal battle. The law needs to win this time.

  11. Kerry77 June 16, 2025

I just can’t believe this happened over a moped of ice cream! What’s next? A pie thief?

  12. QuietOne June 16, 2025

I’ve always wondered if rivalries this intense exist all over? Seems dramatic.

  13. Patricia June 16, 2025

This should be a lesson for small business owners. Know your competition but keep it civil.

    • BeckyL June 16, 2025

And support programs for conflict resolution would help avoid these clashes.

  14. Oliver_t June 16, 2025

Ironic how ice cream is seen as sweet, but competition turned so sour.
