The distinguished Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organisation) recently partook in a collaborative effort with The National Gems and Jewelry Testing Co. Ltd. (NGTC), hailing from Beijing, China. This initiative’s keystone was to nurture the development of widespread evaluation standards and refine the testing protocols for gemstones and jewelry, utilising the much-vaunted GIT Standard as a criterion. This momentous event unfolded within the eminent surroundings of room 211A – 211C, situated within the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.
Mr. Sumed Prasongpongchai, an esteemed figure in charge of the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand, gave insights about the NGTC. Located within the vast landscapes of Beijing, China, the institute is recognised as a dominant player in the gemstone and jewelry testing arena, within the borders of the People’s Republic of China. As highlighted by Mr. Prasongpongchai, it has earned a niche for its proficiency in jade examination. With an eye to cultivate inspection standards shared between Thailand and China, GIT and NGTC had charted the path to a knowledge exchange in gemstone inspection. The outcome marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding during the prestigious 68th Bangkok Gem and Jewellery Fair.
Indeed, this ceremony did not simply entail the officialising of the understanding through signing. Far from it, the occasion also saw the granting of GIT Standard laboratory registration certificates to a high-five: five remarkable laboratories. The proud recipients included:
- Rajamangala University of Technology ISAN, Centre of Industrial Instrument Calibration.
- Institute of Product Quality and Standardisation, Maejo University.
- TGL Thailand Gemological Laboratory.
- Mining Gems and Jewelry Laboratory.
- Bangkok Assay Office Co., Ltd.
Without a doubt, the foundation stone and the guiding beacon of this collaboration were to reconcile the gemstone and jewelry scrutiny practices within Thailand’s borders. This was marked out with a global yardstick. To bring this ambition to fruition, the Institute had expended their efforts into designing a uniform standard, lovingly dubbed the GIT STANDARD. This standard rolls in the protocols for laboratory practices and various operative procedures within its fold. This also includes integration with The National Gem and Jewelry Testing Centre, thereby serving as a technical and scholarly reference point.
The primary vision is to establish a common set of standards for gemstone and jewelry testing laboratories across Thailand. This would empower the smaller-scale laboratories, assisting them in refining their testing quality, broadening the scope and accuracy of their analysis, and perfecting their product testing. The broader scope of this initiative is ensuring a meet-up to the global benchmarks. The long-term view here is to kindle a sense of trust and assurance into Thai gemstone and jewelry testing, thus setting Thailand at the helm of global trade and production in the gem and jewelry industry in terms of testing and quality control. Indeed, a key milestone in their sparkling journey!
