An early Saturday blaze wreaked havoc on Karon Plaza, a beloved shopping and dining destination in tambon Karon, Muang district, Phuket. While the fire left a trail of destruction, there were fortunately no casualties reported.

The inferno erupted around 1:30 AM, as confirmed by Pol Maj Ekkasak Khwanwan, the chief investigator at the Karon police station. As the flames crackled and roared through the night, it wasn’t long before firefighters and fire trucks rushed to the scene. Despite their swift response, it took nearly two grueling hours to tame the fiery beast. Unfortunately, many cherished shops and restaurants couldn’t be saved from the blaze’s clutches.

As dawn began to break and the smoke started to clear, investigations into the cause of the fire were already underway. Police, determined to pinpoint the fire’s origins, began a meticulous examination of the charred remains.

Karon tambon municipality mayor Jadet Witcharasorn shared harrowing details about the rapid spread of the fire. “It quickly engulfed shops selling clothes, body oil, cream conditioners, and soap,” he explained, his voice tinged with concern. An inspection revealed that a staggering two-thirds of the venue had been reduced to ashes, with the damage estimating around 43 million baht, a significant blow to the local economy.

As the community rallied together in solidarity, about 20 shop owners came forward to register their losses with local authorities. Thankfully, some had insurance coverage to soften the blow. Still, the devastation was palpable, with over 30 shops and vending stalls feeling the fire’s wrath.

Yet, in the face of such adversity, the spirit of Phuket’s community shines brightly. Neighbors banded together, offering support and solace to those affected. Plans to rebuild and rejuvenate Karon Plaza are already in motion, fueled by the unwavering determination of its resilient community.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety measures and preparedness. As investigations continue, both locals and authorities aim to ensure that steps are taken to prevent such a tragedy from reoccurring. In the heart of the ashes lies hope, as the people of Karon Plaza look ahead to a brighter, more resilient future.

But what about prevention? Where were the safety measures to begin with?

      • Martha V July 13, 2024

I agree, prevention is key, but blame won’t change what happened. Let’s support the rebuilding effort.

      • Sarah White July 13, 2024

Good point, Tommy. I hope the investigation finds out what went wrong so it doesn’t happen again.

Why are people surprised by this? Fire safety standards in some parts of Thailand are lax.

    • Mai Tran July 13, 2024

Not everywhere! It’s unfair to generalize. Many places take safety seriously.

    • Larry D July 13, 2024

Kevin, it’s easy to sit back and criticize. This fire was a tragedy and pointing fingers won’t help anyone.

  3. Samantha July 13, 2024

This is horrible! Do they need donations? How can we help?

    • Joe July 13, 2024

Great idea, Samantha. Maybe setting up a fund for the affected shop owners would be a good start.

    • grower134 July 13, 2024

I think they might already have some insurance, but extra funds could certainly help.

This should be a wake-up call for better urban planning. Karon Plaza wasn’t equipped to handle such disasters.

Fires are becoming too common. Climate change is making everything worse.

    • GreenThumb21 July 13, 2024

Ravi, I think this is more about human error or negligence than climate change.

    • Ravi Patel July 13, 2024

Possibly, but we can’t ignore the bigger picture. Everything is interconnected.

  8. Jamie July 13, 2024

Feels like this should have been preventable. What was being done to ensure fire safety before this?

    • Paitoon July 13, 2024

That’s the question! We need answers and accountability, not just rebuilding efforts.

How typical that they just mention ‘insurance’ like that’s a cure-all. Compliance to safety regulations should be stricter!

This news really struck a chord with me. I visited Karon Plaza often during my vacation. Saddened by this loss.

  14. Rebecca Choi July 13, 2024

How can a fire cause this much damage in 2023? There should have been better fire controls.

    • Annie July 13, 2024

Technology exists, but its implementation varies. Sadly, sometimes safety doesn’t get the priority it deserves.

    • Rebecca Choi July 13, 2024

True, Annie. Hopefully, this incident changes things for the better.

  15. Dan35 July 13, 2024

Local authorities should be held responsible. This didn’t happen overnight. Negligence played a part.

  16. Sophie T. July 13, 2024

This is just sad. My thoughts are with the shop owners and their families.
