Currently taking place in the heart of Thailand, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), is making strides with the third phase of development at the Map Ta Phut deep-sea port in Rayong. This ambitious project, slated for completion by 2027, constitutes an essential pillar in the country’s infrastructure and contributes to the continually evolving framework of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
The exhilarating progress of this iconic port in the bustling Map Ta Phut region is hitting a series of impressive milestones. With over two-thirds completion of a robust sand dam, considerable advancement in land reclamation, and near half-completion of an embankment efficiently safeguarding the shoreline against tidal influences, the updates offered by Veeris Ammarapala, the IEAT governor, are not just encouraging but revolutionary.
In an explicit display of the project’s significance, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha graced the construction site, inspecting the ongoing work for the Map Ta Phut deep-sea port’s third-phase project, which is nothing short of monumental. As the PM toured the expanse, it was clear that the third-phase development, which spans a sizeable 1,000 rai area, supported by an investment outlay of 55 billion baht, is set to redefine the fabric of the region.
Thailand’s EEC envisions an ambitious future of a high-tech industrial hub spanning over the provinces of Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chachoengsao, and the Map Ta Phut project is one such crucial cog in the vast infrastructure wheel. Other major projects resonating in the EEC are a high-speed rail system connecting three airports, the bold U-Tapao Aviation City, and the third-phase expansion of Laem Chabang deep-sea port in Chon Buri.
The prime minister was evidently in high spirits, appreciating the progress at Map Ta Phut deep-sea port and reiterating the on-track delivery of the project as planned. With the port’s construction in full swing, the IEAT plans to co-develop a state-of-the-art dock focusing on the streamlined transportation and secure storage of liquid goods, prominently liquefied natural gas.
This exciting development is a joint venture between the IEAT and Thai Tank Terminal under the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement, promising extensive growth and change in the region. Thai Tank Terminal is a strategic partnership between the esteemed PTT Global Chemical Plc and the illustrious Royal Vopak NV, globally acclaimed for their unrivalled prowess in tank and storage facilities. This powerful coalition, bound by a 30-year contract as per the PPP, will jointly manage the operation and maintenance of the new dock. The new facility will boast a storage capacity of a staggering 723,000 cubic metres, providing a impressive boost to the infrastructure of Map Ta Phut, as reported by Bangkok Post.
In final remarks, Veeris disclosed the financial compensation offered to families relocated owing to the port’s expansion. In sync with their commitment towards responsible development, authorities have disbursed a sum of 93.4 million baht to 934 affected families, thereby ensuring that the growth of Map Ta Phut deep-sea port is inclusive and respectful of its surrounding community.
