Nigerian Drifters Arrested in Phuket: Reckless Driving and Their Unlikely Serenade

Picture this: a quiet evening on the bustling streets of Phuket, abruptly disrupted by a spectacle more fitting for a Fast and Furious movie than a tranquil Thai road. Last night, the chaos unfolded as two Nigerian men decided to turn an intersection into their personal drifting playground. The intersection at Koh Kaew on Thep Krasattri Road echoed with the screeches of tyres and the gasps of onlookers as a white sedan executed five gravity-defying spins amidst the bustling traffic of bewildered cars and motorcycles.

As the rubber-burning spectacle unfolded, a video emerged on social media courtesy of Newshawk Phuket, capturing the sedan’s brazen ballet, attracting an avalanche of attention and reactions. Meanwhile, some eagle-eyed Thai citizens shared that this wasn’t an isolated incident. This vehicular renegade was spotted pulling the same stunt at an intersection on Pasak Road, reliving its tyre-squealing escapade.

Traffic police from the Thalang Police Station kept a vigilant eye on the dangerous display, eventually tracking the renegades to a seemingly innocuous street, Soi Koh Kaew 23. But these drifters had a flair for the dramatic. Attempting a get-away worthy of a clichéd thriller, the two men made a last-ditch escape effort—steering their vehicle into an alley and then bolting into a forest in a bid to elude the long arm of the law. Yet, despite their attempts to go about their escapade like a cat and mouse game, luck was not on their side, as officers nabbed them and led them away.

However, the encounter at the police station morphed into a theatrical performance. Rather than fearing for their fate, these Nigerian nationals resorted to communicating in an unorthodox manner—they sang. Their melodious, if not maverick, refusal to converse or cooperate brought an unexpected twist to the proceedings, refusing to undergo any drug tests. Alas, one of the suspects didn’t manage to hit the right notes with the justice system. Anamere George, was already wanted for illegally entering Thailand and possession of cocaine. His history of skipping out on courtroom appearances certainly wasn’t scoring him any accolades.

Now the pair face charges under Section 64 of the Immigration Act for illegal entry, which carries hefty penalties, ranging from up to five years of imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 baht. Moreover, their mockery of moving laws—the reckless driving under Sections 43(4) and 157 of the Land Traffic Act—might sound melodious in their rendition, but is punishable by a fine between 400 and 1,000 baht.

Strikingly, this isn’t an isolated showstopper when it comes to tourists blending melodrama with motoring. A similar incident last year saw a Lithuanian man subjecting his BMW Z4 to public road drifting in Chon Buri, leading to the issuance of a 12,000 baht fine.

While the Phuket incident unfurled with a blend of high-speed antics and unexpected hilarity, it also clearly underscores the gravity of reckless driving and the vital necessity of respecting local laws and norms. After all, the roads are not meant to be arenas for thrill-seeking escapades but rather avenues for safe passage. It’s a lesson that these drifting enthusiasts, and others like them, might want to take to heart, lest their next performance gets them more than a front-row seat in the local enforcement theater.

But one could only hope that next time they’re on the road, they replace the soundtrack of screeching tyres with the sweet symphony of sensible driving.

These guys must have lost their minds! Phuket isn’t the place for wannabe street racers.

    • Mike33 March 12, 2025

Totally agree, this isn’t Fast and Furious. They’re putting people’s lives at risk!

      • Anna B March 12, 2025

Exactly! Can you imagine the chaos if someone got hurt?

    • taylor.tech March 12, 2025

But the singing? You couldn’t make this stuff up. Almost feels like a dream.

  2. Larry D March 12, 2025

I mean, who wouldn’t want to pull their best Vin Diesel impressions on a beautiful island like Phuket? Sounds like a cool adventure!

  3. Connie March 12, 2025

It’s all fun and games until someone gets seriously injured. Reckless drivers should face harsher penalties.

    • Ali Y. March 12, 2025

True, but I doubt the fines are enough to deter this kind of behavior.

      • Connie March 12, 2025

I know! What about revoking their driving privileges?

  4. grower134 March 12, 2025

Maybe they just wanted to have fun and got carried away. Everyone makes mistakes.

Turning a police station into a concert hall? That’s definitely a new way to handle an arrest.

    • davey.wavey March 12, 2025

Sounds hilarious, but not a smart move if you’re in legal trouble.

      • Angelina K. March 12, 2025

Yeah, I wonder if they thought they’d win over the police with their tunes.

  6. Jamal L. March 12, 2025

What a waste of youth. Instead of exploring Thailand, they chose to live life on the edge. Shame.

  7. Selena.R March 12, 2025

Can you imagine being a tourist there and seeing that spectacle? Would’ve been wild!

  8. Raymond G March 12, 2025

I think it’s more about the thrill for them. It’s not logical, but who can say no to adrenaline?

    • carla_love March 12, 2025

Adrenaline or not, they should respect the law. Phuket isn’t their personal playground.

  9. Melissa H March 12, 2025

Their attempt to escape into the forest? Straight out of a slapstick comedy!

  10. bob_the_thinker March 12, 2025

This incident reflects badly on Nigeria’s image. Besides, isn’t it better to enjoy Thailand for its beauty?

    • Gabriel5 March 12, 2025

Exactly, these actions overshadow the good things tourists bring to a country.

  11. Alex Tan March 12, 2025

People love drama on social media. That’s why these stunts get so much attention.

    • Sandy O March 12, 2025

That’s true. It’s all about gaining temporary fame, at any cost.

  12. C.J. Turner March 12, 2025

Next time, they should focus on making their songs better instead of their driving skills.

  13. Benny H March 12, 2025

The only thing they achieved was making themselves look foolish.

  14. Zara K March 12, 2025

As a local, incidents like this annoy me. They’re tourists, they should be respectful.

  15. nat_geek March 12, 2025

These stunts aren’t new. Every once in a while, tourists think they’re invincible.

  16. Brian S March 12, 2025

The authorities should make an example out of them—this shouldn’t be tolerated.

  17. Emily March 12, 2025

I’d blame the movies! Some people take Hollywood too seriously and think they’re the main character.

    • Victor March 12, 2025

Movies are meant to entertain, not provide a guide to real life. People should know that.

  18. sim.cant March 12, 2025

There needs to be a balance between having fun and adhering to the law. They crossed the line.

  19. Louise March 12, 2025

Funny how they thought singing was a way out! Maybe they should’ve tried a magic show next?

    • Charlie M. March 12, 2025

If only charm could head off legal trouble. Wishful thinking, huh?

  20. Oscar B March 12, 2025

Everyone’s talking about the singing, but the main point is they broke the law. Full stop.
