In a twist that seems ripped right from a crime thriller novel, a serene corner of Phangnga was rocked by a chilling murder that seemed to spring from the pages of a business rivalry gone fatally wrong. The players in this grim drama? A Pakistani man, his Thai wife, and their unfortunate victim: an Indian man whose business entanglement with the couple turned deadly. Pol Maj Gen Niphon Panitcharoen, the deputy commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, painted a picture of a meticulously orchestrated crime that culminated on a quiet roadside in tambon Lo Yung, Takua Thung district on the fateful day of May 15.

The victim, identified as Indian citizen Poulose Varghese, found his end far from home, his body discovered discarded like an unwanted piece of evidence by the side of a road. His entry into Thailand on April 19, alongside 32-year-old Pakistani Yasir Ashfaq, was supposed to be the beginning of a lucrative chapter in their shared business ventures. Instead, it spelled the beginning of the end for Poulose.

Digging deeper into the ties that bound the victim and the suspects, investigators uncovered a tangled web of commerce and betrayal. Poulose and Mr. Yasir weren’t just business acquaintances; they shared ownership in a Dubai-based enterprise, a connection that extended into a tour company run by Mr. Yasir’s 39-year-old Thai wife. However, this business venture was far from prosperous for Poulose, who, police believe, was lured into investing under false pretenses. As he caught wind of the deception, the plot against him thickened, culminating in his tragic demise.

CCTV footage provided silent testimony to the calculated movements of the suspects, capturing the moment Poulose was transported by car to his final resting place. And as if lifted from a detective novel, the plot thickened during the police raid on the suspects’ residence in tambon Khokkloi, Takua Thung district. There, amidst the quotidian details of domestic life, officers unearthed damning evidence: a gun, the shoes, and clothes of Poulose, whispering tales of the crime.

But there was one more piece to this puzzle – the vehicle, an unwitting accessory to the murder, found parked at the suspects’ condominium in Phuket’s bustling Muang district. As the case unfolds, the intertwined lives of the arrested couple and their victim unravel a story of ambition, deceit, and a murder most foul in the land of smiles.

As the local community grapples with the shock and the police weave together the strands of evidence, one thing is clear: behind the facade of business as usual, a deadly game was played, leaving behind a trail of broken dreams and a reminder of the dark side of human nature.

I’ve been saying for years that these business deals with people you barely know are risky. This is just sad and terrible but not surprising. People need to be more careful who they trust.

While it’s wise to be cautious, let’s not paint all international business deals with the same brush. Many are legitimate and offer great opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration.

      • SkyWatcher May 19, 2024

Fair point, but the risk of fraud and worse, as seen in this tragic case, cannot be ignored. It’s a tough balance to strike.

    • TrueCrimeFan May 19, 2024

It’s like a real-life crime novel. So chilling to think that people can plan and execute something like this!

  2. ConcernedCitizen May 19, 2024

How can something like this happen in Phangnga? It’s usually such a peaceful place. The community must be in shock.

  3. EconMajor May 19, 2024

This is an unfortunate example of how cutthroat the business world can become. It’s crucial to conduct thorough due diligence before entering any partnership.

    • NaiveNancy May 19, 2024

But how do you really know someone’s intentions? Especially in international deals. Due diligence might not reveal true character or desperation.

Curious about the legal proceedings that will follow. This case has elements that span across jurisdictions. Will they be tried in Thailand, or could there be an international trial?

    • LawStudent May 19, 2024

Typically, they’ll be tried in Thailand since the crime occurred there. International law mainly comes into play for extradition issues, not the trial itself.

      • LegalEagle May 19, 2024

Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. It’s going to be interesting to follow this case and see how the legal systems interact.

      • IntlLaw101 May 19, 2024

Correct, and given the high-profile nature of this case, it might set precedents for future cross-border criminal cases. Worth keeping an eye on.

This story is heart-wrenching. I can’t imagine what the victim’s family is going through. Murder aside, the betrayal by someone he considered a business partner is just as tragic.

Stories like these really make me worry about the state of humanity. How can people be so cruel to someone they knew personally?

  6. Reader123 May 19, 2024

Every time I read stories like this, I wonder about the backstory. What pushes someone to commit such a heinous act? Greed? Fear? Desperation?

    • Philosoraptor May 19, 2024

It’s a complex interplay of circumstances, I believe. But at the end of the day, nothing justifies taking another person’s life.

      • Reader123 May 19, 2024

Absolutely agree. It’s just tragic how these scenarios unfold, leaving families destroyed and communities in fear.

This is my cousin brother who served as a chief engineer at ONGC Mumbai. All his dreams after retirement spoiled.
I don’t understand why people kill? Just for money? They must be punished and get all his looted things back to the family in Mumbai, India.
