Tragic Case of Somchai: Medical Negligence in Bangkok’s Pracha Uthit Clinic Sparks Outrage

On what began as an ordinary day in the bustling Pracha Uthit area of Bangkok, a tragic incident unfolded that has sparked widespread outrage and a call for justice. It all started when 60-year-old Somchai, a man battling heart disease, sought medical attention at a local clinic located in Soi Pracha Uthit 33 on a seemingly routine Tuesday afternoon. What transpired next is a harrowing tale of medical negligence that has sent shockwaves through the community, as reported by Facebook page Jmoi V+.

Somchai’s day took a dire turn when he began experiencing a tightness in his chest, a symptom not uncommon for someone with his condition, but alarmingly urgent nonetheless. Recognizing the severity, Somchai enlisted the help of his son, who acted swiftly, escorting him to the nearest medical facility—a clinic they arrived at around 1:30 pm. Upon arrival, Somchai was given medication, but instead of improvement, his condition deteriorated rapidly.

What is striking—and deeply troubling—about this situation is the reported reaction of the clinic staff. A nurse allegedly instructed Somchai’s son with chilling indifference, “Take your father to a hospital. Don’t let him die at the clinic.” This moment marked a fateful and devastating turn of events. As they exited, Somchai collapsed outside the clinic, a scene that no one should have to witness.

Despite the proximity to medical care, it was not the clinic staff who rushed to aid Somchai but rather a nurse living nearby who attempted CPR, all in vain. Even more surprisingly, it was a food vendor, not medical personnel, who stepped up to help get Somchai to Siriraj Hospital. Tragically, the lack of prompt treatment resulted in Somchai being pronounced dead upon arrival, a victim of time lost.

The heartache for Somchai’s family is compounded not only by the loss but also by the manner of the clinic’s handling of the emergency, or rather the lack thereof. Somchai’s son has taken to social media, expressing his heartbreak and outrage over the dismissive comments made by the nurse, calling for disciplinary action citing a grave breach of medical ethics.

The Deputy Director of the Department of Health Service Support, Arkom Praditsuwan, has made assurances to the public of a thorough investigation into the clinic’s conduct. Such a refusal to treat a patient in a critical state is a potential violation of the Hospital Act, carrying serious legal implications, including up to two years of imprisonment or a hefty fine of up to 40,000 baht.

Arkom underscored the criteria set by the National Institute for Emergency Medicine that define a critical emergency case, including symptoms like unconsciousness, severe breathing difficulties, and intense chest pain—symptoms that matched those Somchai experienced. He emphasized that ignoring such signs is not just unethical but possibly criminal.

As of now, the clinic has remained silent, offering no apology or comment to Somchai’s grieving family. The community, and the nation at large, await to see if justice will indeed be served for Somchai, whose life was tragically cut short under the most heartbreaking circumstances.

This distressing tale serves as a stark reminder of the essential duty of care that healthcare providers owe to their patients and the dire consequences of failing to uphold this duty. As we reflect on this tragedy, the call for a compassionate and ethical medical response resonates stronger than ever, imploring those in the medical profession to reaffirm their commitment to humanity, one patient at a time.

This is an absolute travesty! How can a clinic just turn away someone in a life-threatening situation?

    • Sara W June 19, 2025

It’s not just about the clinic’s neglect; it’s about the entire system failing Somchai.

      • John Doe June 19, 2025

Totally agree, Sara. It’s shocking how in this day and age, such negligence still happens.

      • HealthCrusader09 June 19, 2025

Why are local clinics not better equipped? If they’re not ready to handle emergencies, they shouldn’t be in operation!

    • Sam33 June 19, 2025

I’m confused, shouldn’t the clinic have at least called an ambulance?

  2. Mandy June 19, 2025

The nurse’s behavior is inexcusable. The lack of empathy shown towards Somchai and his son reflects the poor state of healthcare in some places.

    • Right2Care June 19, 2025

I think it’s a systemic issue. Understaffed, overworked healthcare staff is unfortunately common.

      • Mandy June 19, 2025

Perhaps, but that shouldn’t excuse complete disregard for human life.

Was there even a doctor present at this clinic? This seems like a clear case of malpractice.

  4. Jessica P. June 19, 2025

I can’t believe that a food vendor was more proactive in helping than the clinic staff. It’s just shameful.

    • Tom R June 19, 2025

It’s ironic, really. Sometimes those with the least responsibility feel it the most.

  5. ConsciousCitizen81 June 19, 2025

This case should make us question the training and accountability standards for medical staff.

    • Nina B June 19, 2025

Perhaps some regulation changes are in order. Ignoring critical signs shouldn’t go unpunished.

  6. Mark June 19, 2025

Such stories make me lose faith in the health system. Heartbreaking!

    • Alex J June 19, 2025

I know what you mean, Mark. We trust medical professionals with our lives, and stories like these shake that trust.

As a medic, I’m appalled. There’s absolutely no excuse for neglecting an emergency patient like this.

    • TruthSeeker55 June 19, 2025

Thanks for speaking out as a medic. Actions like these tarnish the entire profession.

  8. Larry Davis June 19, 2025

Can we talk about legal repercussions? Clearly, there needs to be accountability.

    • Sandra K June 19, 2025

Absolutely. This negligence can’t just be swept under the rug.

    • Larry Davis June 19, 2025

I’d like to see both fines and imprisonment for such gross misconduct.

  9. Peachy June 19, 2025

For Somchai’s family, justice seems like the only way forward now. Their pain must be unimaginable.

  10. Joe June 19, 2025

I’m worried about other patients in that area. Are they safe?

    • Alice M June 19, 2025

That’s a valid concern, Joe. Assurance from healthcare providers about their capabilities is needed.

  11. Liam L June 19, 2025

How many more tragedies need to happen before healthcare is taken seriously?

    • Zara June 19, 2025

Exactly. This should serve as a wake-up call to all healthcare entities.

  12. ReflectiveMind June 19, 2025

What measures do you think they’ll enact to prevent this from happening again?

    • Deepthought June 19, 2025

Hopefully, mandatory emergency response training and stricter policies.
