Touristy Paradise Amidst a Legal Storm in Pattaya City

Unveiling developments in Thailand’s Pattaya city, a favorite destination spot thanks to the popular Island destination, Koh Lan. This island is the heart of attraction for a myriad of tourists from countries like Russia, China, and India. This picturesque locale, unfortunately, has been plunged into a legal storm, as Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai takes the lead in handling illegal forest encroachment issues.

News of alleged encroachment on forest land close to the beautiful beach of Sangwan, was initially brought up by a local non-governmental organization. This triggered concern from Pattaya City officials who subsequently conducted a survey to investigate these claims. Their findings painted a disheartening picture – almost 10 rai of the forest land had been eradicated.

The city’s legal department has been entrusted with forwarding the survey findings to the Royal Forest Department, kick-starting the process of further course of action. Notably, Pattaya City, led by Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai, has lodged a legal complaint against those responsible for this blatant breach.

Koh Lan has always been a source of great allure, drawing in an estimated count of 10,000 tourists every single day, a testament to its irresistible charm. However, these developments have set off alarm bells regarding a more significant issue at hand: illegal land acquisition. A challenge the city has been grappling with, as tourism companies aggressively venture towards excessive commercial development.

The island, home to seven beaches, including Hat Sangwan, is now being overwhelmed by the influx of tourists. This saturation raises another concern – the problem of issuing title deeds and other ownership documents. Mr Manote addressed this concern further hinting at a broader issue.

Residents of the Baan Koh Lan community, whose livelihood depends mostly on farming and fishing, have been living in this area for years. Their plea for authorities to resolve the land ownership issue has been heard loud and clear. Despite their prolonged stay, many do not hold the required land ownership documentation.

As a remedy to such complex issues, the role of Pattaya City has evolved. After administration of the island was transferred from the Chon Buri provincial office to Pattaya City, it now plays the critical role of mediating land ownership disputes between residents and authorities. Through this initiative, the office aims to bring some respite and resolve to the matter, restoring the beauty and serenity of Koh Lan.

With Pattaya City at the helm, led strongly by Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai, reparations are in progress, and there is a continued effort to protect and preserve the captivating charm of Thailand’s tourism jewel, Koh Lan.
