In a riveting tale pulsating across the digital vines of social media earlier this week, villagers in regions of Mueang and neighboring Tha Wung districts of Lopburi province were reportedly swept into a collective frenzy. The spark that ignited this bedlam? Assertions from a local that they had chanced upon the specter known as the krasue.

This wave of apprehension, however, was soon quelled by the voice of reason. Muang’s strategic commander, Phitsanu Praphathanan, spoke out on Wednesday, revealing that the phantom that had the villagers spooked was in fact, a chicken thief. Moreover, the thief’s eerie appearance was merely a disguise; he had donned the mask of an elderly woman with strands of faded hair glossing her face, and a set of terrifying fangs.

Phitsanu has since issued advisories to all regional administrators and local village authorities to forewarn villagers about potential threats stemming from thieves, urging communities to adopt a more pragmatic approach rather than giving in to ineffable fears of non-existent ghouls.

Wutthichai Paepan, a 32-year-old entrepreneur and proprietor of Pang Pang Camping resort nestled in the heart of Saraburi’s Kaeng Khoi district, shared his insights with the media. He divulged that he had withdrawn a previously set reward offer, following a phone call with a Lopburi official.

The official expressed concerns over the growing interest in the krasue and reported instances of teenagers’ motorbike noises disturbing the peace during the night. “After careful consideration of the local residents’ safety and potential unlawful activities, I decided to rescind the 1 million baht reward,” Wutthichai stated.

Despite being a native of Mueang Lopburi, Wutthichai confessed not having any personal faith in the existence of krasue. He recalled spectral stories that formed part of the local folklore during his childhood but firmly asserted, “Although everyone has a right to their beliefs, I am guided by the principle of seeing to believe.”

Wutthichai further requested krasue enthusiasts to respect local residents’ tranquility, urging them not to cause any disruptions in their quest.

For those unfamiliar with the Thai lore, a krasue is a female spirit characterized by internal organs trailing down from the neck. This supernatural being has found fame through various Thai TV series and films, further fueling the curiosity and fear associated with it.

Per these legends, this spirit ventures out of its body, coursing through the night skies in its relentless pursuit of fish and other unsavory delicacies from dusk till dawn. A distinguishing feature of the krasue is her organs that eerily glow red or green while on such nocturnal hunts.
