A frantic search is underway for 22-year-old Malaysian woman, Angie Chong Sum Yee, who has been missing since her visit to the border town of Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province, Thailand. Her worried mother, in a bid to gather information about her missing daughter, shared a desperate plea on Facebook in both Chinese and English, accompanied by the photos Angie sent during her trip. The post has since been translated into Thai and garnered widespread attention on various social media platforms, including the “Muang Chiang Mai” Facebook page.

Angie embarked on a solo journey to Chiang Mai by air on May 29. During her trip, she would regularly send pictures of the locations she visited in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to her mother. However, the last set of pictures sent was from Mae Sai, Chiang Rai, which is situated opposite Myanmar’s Tachilek on the border. Among these photos were snapshots of the border checkpoints of Mae Sai and Tachilek. Since then, Angie’s mother has not been able to establish any contact with her daughter, raising concerns that she may have crossed the border into Tachilek and could be in danger.

The immigration and tourist police, in an effort to locate Angie Chong Sum Yee, have reached out to Myanmar officials stationed at the Tachilek checkpoint. They requested the authorities to review the security camera footage to determine if the young Malaysian woman had indeed crossed the border into Tachilek. The area houses numerous large casinos and business complexes where many individuals from Thailand and other countries are employed.

With the power of social media amplifying the mother’s call for help, the search for Angie Chong Sum Yee has gained momentum, and concerned netizens are hoping for her safe and swift return.
