Earlier this month, the Election Commission launched a campaign encouraging people to vote tomorrow. Trucks with loud speakers traveled across Bangkok, asking people to exercise their right to vote, which they haven’t done in nearly a decade.
In nine years, Bangkok will conduct its first governor election. With 31, the number of candidates registered for the election is the highest it has ever been. Candidates registered in City Hall in March, each promising to address a different issue.
We know you can’t get enough of Thailand’s alcohol limitations, so tonight in Pattaya and Bangkok, there will be another one for you! Because of the Pattaya mayoral election and the Bangkok governor election, both of which are planned for tomorrow, alcohol sales will be forbidden in Pattaya and Bangkok from 6 p.m. today (Saturday) to 6 p.m. tomorrow night. During the following 24 hours, no alcohol can be purchased, sold, or distributed. The ban will apply to all 50 Bangkok districts, but not to nearby provinces such as Nakhon Pathom or Nonthaburi. A six-month prison sentence, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both can be imposed for breaking the law. Make your way over there if you’re in dire need of some Singha.
According to sources, the ban is meant to prevent “alcohol voting” in Thailand, which prevents people from voting for candidates they might later regret. It is also believed to be used to avoid tampering with election results. In previous elections, enraged social media users, particularly expats, referred to the prohibition as part of Thailand’s “ridiculous war on drink.”

From 6 p.m. on Saturday, alcohol will be prohibited in Pattaya and Bangkok
