Heartbreak has struck the world of glitz and glamour as the once majestic Malibu abode of former Miss Universe, Porntip Nakhirunkanok, succumbs to the ravenous wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles. This idyllic seaside sanctuary, more than just a building of stone and timber, stood as the cornerstone of her life’s chronicles, enveloping her family’s cherished moments for over a quarter of a century. The breathtaking beauty of this place bore witness to countless memories—a vibrant kaleidoscope of love, laughter, and life itself.

In a deeply emotional Instagram post from her account under the handle @bui.simon, the esteemed beauty queen, now 56, poured her heart out to the world. “We lost our beloved home in Malibu yesterday,” she penned somberly. Her words resonated with the depth of her loss, “so many precious memories in that special house… where my babies were born and raised. My first home and sacred nest for 25 years has now been reduced to ashes… erasing all the belongings, photos, and mementos of the last few decades.” The home, like an old friend, had been with her through life’s tribulations and triumphs.

Affectionately known as Bui, Porntip took on the surname Simon following her marriage. Her dazzling ascent into fame was marked by her victory when she crowned as Miss Universe in 1988, securing her place as the second ever Thai woman to illuminate the global stage, following in the elegant footsteps of Apasra “Pook” Hongsakula in 1964. Yet, she is not alone in her sorrow, as an array of celebrated stars such as Billy Crystal, Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins, and Mandy Moore find themselves grappling with similar losses. The insatiable wildfires continue their path of destruction across Los Angeles, casting a somber shadow over the city of angels.

The relentless inferno, as reported by Reuters, has claimed ten lives, a climb from the previously reported seven, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. The Malibu fires have transformed the lavish lives of these stars into smoke and cinders, leaving individuals like Porntip to navigate the desolate landscape of what once held their dreams and memories.

Porntip, lovingly nicknamed “Bui,” was born in the vibrant city of Bangkok. Her endearing nickname translates to “to sleep like a baby” in Thai, a fitting moniker for her tranquil disposition. In the early 1970s, her family relocated to the States, where she attended Washington Irving Middle School and Franklin High School in Los Angeles. Her exemplary service to children in need inspired the Thai King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, to bestow upon her the Thai Royal Medal of Honour, the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, in August 1988. Continuing in her humanitarian efforts, she was awarded a second Royal Decoration in 2001, the Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand.

Porntip’s altruistic pursuits led to her appointment as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Thailand in 1989 by Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. Her advocacy work included addressing the UN General Assembly on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. With aspirations for personal growth, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University. In a turn of romance, she wed Herbert Simon, the entrepreneurial owner of the Indiana Pacers basketball team and Simon Property Group, in 2002.

This tale of loss reverberates through the corridors of history, demonstrating the fragility of our ties to the physical world and highlighting the indomitable strength of the human spirit. As Porntip mourns what has been lost—a home, a repository of cherished narratives—she shares in the collective resilience of those whose lives have similarly been touched by the flames.

It’s so tragic how wildfires affect everyone, regardless of fame or wealth. They are a true equalizer.

I agree, but it’s hard to sympathize with millionaires losing their mansions when ordinary people lose everything.

Fame or not, loss is loss. Memories can’t be bought or rebuilt easily.

Exactly, it’s about the emotional connection, which doesn’t discriminate by income level.

But isn’t it hypocritical when celebrities lecture us about climate change while living in huge carbon footprint mansions?

      • Mike101 January 11, 2025

Their platform can still be useful for raising awareness, though I get your point about hypocrisy.

      • Sam_B January 11, 2025

True, but every voice counts, especially those that can reach millions. It’s a complex issue.

Agreed. The more powerful voices joining the cause, the better.

Does anyone else think it’s poetic how someone who lived a life of luxury is now contributing to climate discourse through personal loss?

It’s sad, but maybe it’s a wake-up call for all of us. No one is immune to nature’s wrath.

Exactly! Every disaster is a learning opportunity, if we choose to see it that way.

It’s partly because of climate change and partly due to how these areas have been managed over the years.

Exactly, there’s a lot of complex factors at play. We shouldn’t just blame one thing.

Are these fires a regular thing? Seems like every year the news is filled with similar stories.

Unfortunately, they are becoming far too common due to climate changes and land mismanagement.

The scary part is that it doesn’t seem like it’ll stop anytime soon.

  13. Larry Davis January 11, 2025

I wonder if famous people like her will ever consider relocating owing to such recurrent dangers.

  15. MarcAllen January 11, 2025

Somber to see how fires strip bare the pretenses of wealth, showing us how vulnerable we all are in the end.
