In a heart-wrenching incident that underscores the profound bond between humans and their pets, a 67-year-old man tragically lost his life while valiantly attempting to save his beloved dog. This incident unfolded in the picturesque province of Chanthaburi, a place known for its lush orchards and serene landscapes, casting a shadow over the tranquil setting.

On the sunny afternoon of February 2, around 2 p.m., the tranquil atmosphere was shattered when Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanachet Phromtha from Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station received a distressing report. The Chanthaburi Sawang Katanyu Thammasathan Foundation Rescue Centre informed him of a drowning incident that had occurred in a fruit orchard tucked away in Chedi 1 Alley, located in the Tha Chang subdistrict of the Mueang district.

Upon arriving at the scene, Lieutenant Colonel Thanachet, flanked by a team of investigative officers, a forensic specialist from Phra Pok Klao Hospital, and dedicated rescue personnel, assessed the situation. They discovered a pond lined with tarp, measuring a substantial 20×20 meters, with depths varying between one and two meters. The pond was enshrouded by a tapestry of bamboo sticks and the emerald hue of floating duckweed, rendering the search for the victim perilous and arduous. To facilitate the recovery, the pond’s owner drained it partially, enabling the retrieval of the victim’s body, albeit with significant effort.

As the investigation unfolded, a poignant narrative emerged. Areerat, the 55-year-old niece of the deceased, tearfully identified the victim as Boonmee Chuensonthi. She recounted how Boonmee had always been a gallant rescuer for his furry companions, particularly for his cherished dog, Cola. This devoted stray had been in Boonmee’s care for over a year, earning a special place in his heart. On that fateful day, Cola had accidentally tumbled into the pond owned by a nearby resident. True to his caring nature, Boonmee rushed to the pond to save Cola, completely unaware of the impending danger.

The story took a heartrending twist as Cola managed to remain afloat long enough for Chatchaphon, the 24-year-old pond owner, to swoop in and save him. Chatchaphon, unaware of the dire situation Boonmee was in, had initially intended only to pump water into his orchard. Upon arrival, he was greeted by the sight of Cola struggling and noticed a solitary floating hat and boot on the water’s edge. Mistakenly assuming a harmless accident involving the dog, he saved Cola, inadvertently leaving Boonmee submerged in the depths.

The alarm was sounded when Boonmee’s relatives, driven by mounting concern over his prolonged absence, stumbled upon clues along the pond’s edge—a hat, a boot, and a familiar watering can. These items, intimately associated with Boonmee, spurred them into action, ultimately leading them to uncover their loved one’s body at the pond’s bottom. Their grim discovery prompted an urgent call to the police for assistance, as reported by KhaoSod.

Boonmee’s affinity for rescuing stray animals was widely acknowledged, reflecting the kind heart and courageous spirit that defined his life. Despite his family’s cautious warnings about potential mishaps, the lingering shadow of an incident like this was a thought too heart-rending to bear. However, Boonmee’s dedication to the dogs he so adored transcended their fears, becoming an emblematic tale of unwavering love and sacrifice.

As the community mourns the loss of a compassionate soul, Boonmee’s tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable twists of fate, as well as the boundless courage derived from love.
