An unexplored tale resides in the heart of a three-story townhouse in the bustling district of Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. The date was August 28, 2023, when an unimaginable calamity unfolded inside these walls, claiming the lives of a woman and her two sons while leaving her husband severely injured. A grim specter of a crime scene was all that was left, now under the watchful eye of a police officer, forensic officers, and a rescue worker. (Photo: Sutthiwit Chayutworakan)

The eerie silence was broken when a woman connected with a nefarious scam gang linked to this very family devastation was apprehended. She was arrested at the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint of Sa Kaeo post her return from Cambodia, precisely on a Wednesday afternoon. By the collective efforts of immigration investigators, local police and paramilitary rangers, they successfully detained Jirapinya Naeyued aged 22. The arrest took place at the inbound passenger terminal immediately after she crossed the borderline through Ban Khlong Luk checkpoint, located in Cambodia’s Poipet town. The announcement came directly from Pol Col Rung Thongmon, the chief of Sa Kaeo immigration police, during an early Thursday morning press brief.

The arrest was a direct result of a tip-off about a suspect, suspected of operating a mule bank account for a scam gang. The same gang was linked with the tragic sequence in Samut Prakan that saw the murder of three family members. Ms. Jirapinya found herself caught in the crosshairs, with charges of collusion in fraud, entering false information into a computer system damaging people, and participating in transnational criminal activities. The arrest warrant was issued straight from the Samut Prakan provincial court.

In a surprising turn of events, the woman recognized herself as the accused party during the questioning. The immigration officers held her initially before turning her over to Bang Kaeo police in Samut Prakan to face her fate with the legal proceedings yet to come.

Earlier, Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn pointed to the scam gang as the culprits behind the home tragedy in Samut Prakan. The incident saw a man, driven to despair after his wife’s unfortunate run-in with the gang’s scam, commit the murder of his wife and their two sons. Unsuccessful in his suicide attempt, he was left to face the bitter reality of his actions.

Another woman was arrested the following day under similar circumstances – she was returning to Thailand from Cambodia and was involved with the same scam gang. This arrest was also made at a border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo.

Earlier this month, four Thai natives including three women were arrested in Poipet. They are suspected of making the scam calls that spiraled into the family disaster in Samut Prakan.
