The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is accelerating the documentation process for breeders of the red-whiskered bulbul bird, or scientifically known as Pycnonotus jocosus. Considered as a preserved species, this bird species is a preferred choice amongst breeders who are still not officially registered. Recognized as protected wildlife species No 550 under the regulations of 2003, it has been clarified which species can be kept without requiring a permit and those being sheltered from illegal hunting, a statement shared by Athapol Charoenshunsa, the acting director-general of the DNP.

As much as this bird is considered protected, it has drawn attention due to a large number being illegally kept by breeders without official permits. The process for obtaining a permit is time-consuming and stringent, which has led to the registration of only 11,466 people up to this point. However, according to the data provided by a club of red-whiskered bulbul breeders, the actual number of breeders is significantly higher than what the records indicate, shared Charoenshunsa.

With this discrepancy in mind, DNP has chosen to simplify the process making it more convenient and accessible for both the breeders and the bird-loving community at large. Charoenshunsa believes that this move will substantially contribute to safeguarding the red-whiskered bulbul species living in the wild against potential poachers.

The red-whiskered bulbul, a bird of striking appearance, with an approximate length of 20 centimeters, boasts brown upper-parts contrasted with whitish underparts. It is further characterized by buff flanks and a distinctive dark spur running onto the breast at shoulder level. Its prominent features are a tall pointed black crest and a red face patch. The tail, long and brown, is uniquely embellished with white tips on the end feathers. These physical traits contribute significantly to the bird’s appeal and popularity amongst breeders.

In light of these factors, the recent steps to simplify registration processes for breeding the red-whiskered bulbul represent a significant improvement for bird enthusiasts. More importantly, such moves help ensure that this unique and protected species will continue to thrive and be appreciated but in a way that is responsible and preserves their natural habitats.
