ID will be needed to purchase cannabis buds

According to the Department for the Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Thai citizens wishing to purchase cannabis buds would soon need to provide their ID cards, with sales data being logged on a public database (DTAM). Director-general of the department Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong declared that he had signed the order, and that it would go into effect as soon as it was published in the Royal Gazette. It is unknown if foreigners who want to purchase cannabis buds will need to present identification, such as a passport. There is no mention of any requirement in the most recent health ministry pamphlet, “10 Things Tourists Need to Know about Cannabis in Thailand.” The restriction is the most recent in a slew of temporary rules put in place to respond to issues that have come up since marijuana was taken off the national drugs list in June of last year. Sellers of cannabis on Pattaya Walking Street require licenses but cannot obtain them

After cannabis was decriminalized, the street vendors of Pattaya could be the next target in the ongoing battle to bring cannabis sales under control. The police are informing market and street vendors that they cannot sell cannabis products without a license and are issuing a warning. The caveat is that permits can only be obtained by businesses with a physical location, which pop-up stands lack. This is a requirement for acquiring a license. According to a report published yesterday night in The Pattaya News, police officers have informed street vendors that they will be asked to leave Pattaya Walking Street if they cannot present a valid license. The chief of police in Pattaya highlighted that since cannabis is a controlled narcotic, only vendors with the proper permissions are permitted to sell the drug. In June, when cannabis was ultimately decriminalized and made lawful, relatively few regulations and prohibitions also became…

New efforts to criminalize cannabis are disregarded by Anutin

Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul has dismissed an effort to re-criminalize cannabis amid continued efforts to reverse the nation’s recent decision to legalize the drug. According to Anutin, who also serves as deputy prime minister, the cannabis debate has been resolved and is concluded. Those who oppose the legalization of marijuana are reclassifying it as a narcotic of Type 5. In this case, the drug would fall within the purview of the Office of Narcotics Control. Anutin, however, believes that the legalization of cannabis would not lead to an increase in the drug’s usage by minors because it will only be used for medical purposes. Despite the fact that smoking marijuana is more difficult than consuming alcohol or smoking cigarettes, the risk is rather modest, he advised parents to keep a tight eye on their children. “Now that the law has been approved, individuals who oppose the planned use…

Local marijuana merchants and farmers fear the law’s first withdrawal

It has been several months since Thailand passed legislation making marijuana legal, semi-legal, not illegal, not illegal at all, or maybe quasi-legal. On June 9, Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis on a national level, and just the third country in the world to do so overall, following Canada and Uruguay. Or so we believed at the time. People in the tourism industry, smokers, patients, and sellers are all trying to conduct their businesses almost entirely outside of any legal framework. But if there is one thing that they can all agree on, it is that new laws will be enacted sooner or later. In the meantime, uncertainty will continue to reign supreme in this infant market, in which no one can predict what the next step will be. Local business owners who are involved in the marijuana industry want the government to reaffirm its support…
