In a bid to scale the festive cheer from its nucleus in the capital to national ecstasy, the government is ready to bring vibrancy throughout Thailand through its annual Winter Festivals. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, the man behind this grand idea, made the big announcement on his Facebook page. The announcement came after an enlightening conversation with Tourism and Sport Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Thailand Tourism Authority’s (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, and Bangkok’s Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
They’d been brainstorming on how to organize the “Colourful Bangkok Winter Festival,” which is set to flavour the year-end with vibrancy and cheer. Apparently, there are plans for at least 11 soft power-related activities slated to occur – stay tuned for more information in the ensuing month!
The Colourful Bangkok Festival is an intriguing project in the pipeline – the TAT and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plan to collaborate on five “big events.” The goal? To amplify the winter celebrations in Bangkok and make it memorable from October to December.
Thapanee enlightens us with how Colourful Bangkok came about, the initiative is a joint venture courtesy of TAT, BMA, and the Culture Ministry – the ultimate aim is to leverage this ‘soft power’ to, metaphorically, put the event on the global map.
With the festivals planned under the umbrella of creative tourism, the expectations are sky-high. They are set to stimulate tourism due to their strategic scheduling during high season. The term ‘Colourful Bangkok’ sums up five major events: the 2023 Loi Krathong Festival, Vijit Chao Phraya 2023, Amazing Thailand Passport Privileges, Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2023, and Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024, as revealed by Thapanee.
The vision behind these events? The city wants to showcase their everyday life, their unique identity by channelling creativity into tourism, says Thapanee. City Hall’s mission includes promoting the capital as a hotbed for creativity and culture – the numerous planned events, along with arts and performances, are perfect conduits to achieve this goal. The headline of these events will be a New Year Countdown on Rattanakosin Island.
Expect colorful pomp and grandeur because, as Chadchart reports, City Hall is leaving no stone unturned to guarantee Colourful Bangkok rings true to its name!
