Thailand’s acting Deputy Prime Minister, Wissanu Krea-ngam disclosed that the government has refunded approximately 400 million baht, a fortune retrieved from a group of Chinese swindlers operating an online scam, back to the Chinese administration. This reimbursement symbolizes the successful collaborative endeavors of international law enforcement to combat cybercrime, particularly in regard to the growing menace of online fraud.
Wissanu Krea-ngam made this revelation, indicating it was during a previous trip to Beijing that he and his delegation restored the recovered sum to their Chinese counterparts. This action was taken following detailed investigations and the eventual apprehension of the fraud gang by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) and law enforcement authorities. The culprits were domiciling in posh apartments in Bangkok prior to their capture.
As reported by Amlo, the scam gang had deceived approximately 33,000 unsuspecting Chinese citizens, coaxing them into investing in a counterfeit e-commerce venture within China’s borders. After duping these investors and absconding with their hard-earned money, they fled to Thailand, splurging the funds on extravagant assets such as properties.
However, after their arrest and indictment last year, their unjustly acquired properties were liquidated for an estimated total of 400 million baht. Exemplifying a strong commitment to justice and international law enforcement cooperation, the Thai government communicated their intention to Beijing authorities to return the confiscated money to the scam victims via the Chinese government.
Chinese State Councillor and Public Security Minister, Wang Xiaohong, was given the recovered funds during a formal meeting with Mr. Wissanu in Beijing on July 19. It was an event that heightened bilateral moves towards a more inclusive global community, corroborating the Acting Deputy Prime Minister’s remarks, “It does bring delight that the Chinese administration, for the first time, has acknowledged receiving reimbursement resultant from the actions of its nationals from another country’s government.”
In recognition of these extensive efforts by the Thai government and a showing of gratitude, the Chinese government has granted two fellowships each year to officials within Amlo – a significant step towards building a stronger alliance between these two countries in the domain of law enforcement and cybercrime tackling.
Wang Xiaohong expressed a deep-rooted bond between China and Thailand, reiterating the mutual commitment to creating a shared future within the China-Thailand community. This powerful bond was formally announced last year, signifying a fresh epoch in China-Thailand relations. Wang promised that China is poised to collaborate more closely with Thailand, devoting efforts to realizing the shared objectives laid down by both nations’ leaderships. By deepening cooperation in practical security and law enforcement, both countries aim to better serve and protect their populace, taking one more step towards a safe electronic space globally.
