Daorung: From Revered Monk to Infamous Thief in Thailand’s Aranyaprathet

Once a revered monk, now just a cautionary tale, 54-year-old Daorung has managed to find himself on the wrong side of the law. Known for his tranquil days at Wat Don Mai Fai, Aranyaprathet’s serene village temple, Daorung recently found himself in an entirely different environment: the relentless pursuit by Police Colonel Wisit Buasongwong’s team, following a rather ill-chosen career path as a thief.

His tale begins innocuously enough in Sa Kaeo province where, after a tenure in the monkhood, he swapped meditation for intoxication. Bend after bend in the bottle blurred the boundary between reality and imagination. Soon, he found himself taking wildlife advice from hallucinations urging him to wield a kitchen knife and plunder the peaceful temple’s donation box. The spoils? A cool 18,000 baht—an amount that, unfortunately, whispered loudly enough for Daorung to indulge his thirst further.

In a scene that nearly sounds plucked from fiction, Daorung counted his new fortune, almost reminiscent of Scrooge McDuck’s daily dives into his vault. But numbers never lie, and 18,000 baht (roughly US$555) was the figure to remember. Realizing he couldn’t squander his ill-gotten gains in familiar surroundings, he cleverly hopped onto a bus bound for Aranyaprathet, the sleepy town now unknowingly complicit in his dodgy escapades.

With a touch of irony, Daorung sought sanctuary in temples, train stations, and bus stations—nightcaps under the starry sky his unexpected penance. Half of his chanced-on jackpot vanished promptly, poured down the channels of liquor bottles and café tables, painting a story of misfortune and merriment. Fate, however, dealt an unforgiving hand, as the remaining 8,000 baht (US$245) disappeared one murky night, the hands of deceitful sleep stealing it away.

After a kaleidoscope of blunders and brief comfort, Daorung ultimately couldn’t dodge his dogged pursuers—or his own overwhelming remorse. Shackled, yet seemingly lighter with his confession, he owned up to his misdemeanors. Emotion unraveling, Daorung voiced his heartfelt apologies to the temple’s abbot and its community of peaceful souls, promising he’d gone rogue solo.

Legal proceedings commenced, the shadow of the law now looming over Daorung as Police Lieutenant Samruay Obklang took the reins. The charges of nighttime theft—and perhaps some entertaining tales of dreams of riches under the spell of spirits—were prepared, setting the stage for Daorung’s next chapter.

Just down the line, in another episode of temple thievery, police nabbed Piyaphan, a 42-year-old caught on CCTV swiping 5,000 baht from donation boxes. The unholy shenanigans were swiftly handled by Police Colonel Worayut Pongtan whose officers uncovered Piyaphan’s hideout, writing yet another crime saga on Thailand’s bustling streets.

These bizarre events only scratch the surface of Thailand’s recent heist headlines. From a snack thief threatening with scissors to a luxury watch scam in Bangkok, it seems the Land of Smiles is experiencing its very own crime caper season.

As Daorung’s narrative unfolds, it perhaps leaves a lasting lesson: the fine line between tranquility and turmoil. And in those silent moments staring at the temple’s walls, he might just wonder if the siren’s song of spirits was worth the cascade of consequences, or simply echoes bouncing off the hollow vessels of past choices.

It’s truly sad to see someone who was once revered fall so low. The lure of alcohol and money seems to have destroyed him.

    • JaneSays July 14, 2025

I don’t know, Larry. Maybe it’s just human nature? We’re all capable of making poor decisions.

      • Larry D July 14, 2025

True, but as a monk, wasn’t he supposed to rise above such temptations? It’s disappointing.

    • Grower134 July 14, 2025

Maybe the monkhood was just a phase for him. Not everyone is cut out for such a life.

  2. Sammy22 July 14, 2025

Stealing from a temple is just unforgivable, no matter the circumstances!

    • Kara.b July 14, 2025

Yet, he returned to apologize. Doesn’t that count for something in terms of redemption?

    • HistoryBuff77 July 14, 2025

Historically, monks have faced struggles too. Remember, they’re humans, not saints.

  3. Linda Lee July 14, 2025

Can’t believe Thailand is having so many thefts lately. What a shame for such a beautiful country!

  4. Joe July 14, 2025

Alcohol is a problem everywhere. It’s not just Thailand. It’s around the world.

    • Emily P. July 14, 2025

Very true, Joe. It’s a universal issue, but the context here makes it particularly disheartening.

      • Joe July 14, 2025

Yeah, seeing it affect spiritual communities is especially troubling.

  5. NerdAlert89 July 14, 2025

I’m curious if this was the first incident for Daorung or just the first time he got caught.

    • Terry July 14, 2025

I think he just got desperate. First time or not, he slipped up badly.

  6. Maya L. July 14, 2025

This is unfortunate, but maybe Daorung can find redemption and help others avoid the same path.

    • HopefulHarry July 14, 2025

I agree, Maya. Maybe this experience will make him a strong advocate against alcoholism.

  7. JohnDoe56 July 14, 2025

Seems like crime is on the rise everywhere. Can’t even trust religious figures anymore.

  8. SarahB! July 14, 2025

Such a heartbreaking story. I visited Wat Don Mai Fai last year. Hard to imagine such a scandal happening there.

    • OutdoorsyAndy July 14, 2025

I wonder if it’s the ‘small town effect’ where everyone knows everyone, making secrets harder to keep.

  9. Analyst105 July 14, 2025

This case raises questions about mental health support for monks. Maybe Daorung lacks emotional outlets.

  10. CoolKid5 July 14, 2025

Daorung should have just stayed a monk. Looks like the simpler life is the way to go.

    • MargaretQueen July 14, 2025

Sometimes society doesn’t appreciate the mental burden that comes with a monk’s life. It’s not all peace and tranquility.

  11. DeepThinker2018 July 14, 2025

Was Daorung punished more because he was a monk? Society tends to have double standards.

  12. Hibiscus76 July 14, 2025

Stealing is never right, but judging someone’s journey is tricky. We don’t know his full story.

    • SkepticTom July 14, 2025

His journey might be tricky, but straightforward facts don’t require the full story.

  13. TinaLane July 14, 2025

Crazy how temple thefts are a thing. Always thought of temples as sacred and safe spaces.

  14. Reader42 July 14, 2025

People blaming only alcohol are missing the point. It’s about societal issues masking as personal failures.
