According to government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, there has been a notable increase in the number of dengue fever cases reported even before the onset of the rainy season, which typically witnesses a surge in cases. Between January 1 and June 7, hospitals across the country recorded a total of 19,503 cases, with 17 of them resulting in fatalities.
Comparatively, from January to May, the department had announced 15 deaths and 18,173 dengue fever cases. Anucha warned that the situation could likely deteriorate during the rainy season, as accumulated rainwater in discarded containers creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Interestingly, this year’s number of dengue fever cases is up to 3.8 times higher than the same period last year. The most affected demographic is children aged 5 to 14, followed by those between 15 and 24 years old. The fever has been detected in 348 districts across 71 provinces.
Over the past month, Trat, Nan, Chanthaburi, Mae Hong Son, and Satun provinces have reported the highest number of dengue fever cases. Anucha emphasized that the disease could prove fatal for individuals who delay seeking medical treatment or those with pre-existing conditions such as obesity.
To help mitigate the spread of dengue fever, Anucha advises residents to maintain a clean and tidy home environment, promptly remove trapped rainwater in discarded containers, and ensure all water containers are securely covered. In addition, schools, hospitals, resorts, hotels, factories, temples, and government offices are encouraged to uphold high standards of cleanliness and hygiene to prevent mosquito breeding.
By implementing these measures and promoting public awareness, the authorities hope to effectively combat the spread of dengue fever and safeguard the well-being of the population during the upcoming rainy season.
