Steeped in the heart of bustling Bangkok, a mammoth four-metre tall statue stands resolute on private property, catching the attention of the city’s officials and the curiosity of its inhabitants. The statue, a resemblance of Khru Kai Kaeo—a mythical character with the cryptic allure of a winged gargoyle, complete with razor-sharp fangs and striking crimson talons—was erected by a hotel owner, quickly becoming a head-turner on the buzzing Ratchadaphisek Road.
This enigmatic effigy has not only sparked intrigue among motorists and pedestrians but has also made its way into the headlines of Thai media, fuelling discussions among web-based communities. Whispers of the legend attached to the Khru Kai Kaeo – a character who was ostensibly once the tutor of an ancient Khmer empire king- have swirled around. Notably, a handful of these discussions marvel at the mythology of Khru Kai Kaeo as a ‘god of wealth.’
However, not all reviews are warm and welcoming. The Council of Artists Supporting Buddhism of Thailand have penned down their concerns, submitting a formal complaint to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The council remains resolute in their belief that devotees of Khru Kai Kaeo actively promote doctrines contrary to the fundamental Buddhist principles, urging the removal of the statue as a response.
Anxiety has also been expressed by The National Thai People’s Council, bypassing the typical bureaucratic ladder to aim their grievances towards Chadchart personally. Their allegations paint a concerning picture, envisioning plans to hold non-typical rituals at the foot of the statue, inclusive of animal sacrifices. Their plea to the city calls for interference to prevent the initiation of such rituals.
Responding to the mounting concerns, Chadchart acknowledges the need for a thorough investigation of the criticisms levelled at the monument, attesting to the BMA’s commitment to probe all complaints meticulously. A crucial part of this methodical investigation will be the canvassing of local residents regarding the statue—standing as a testament to inclusive governance.
Addressing the public unease about the statue, Chadchart has scheduled a meeting with the hotel owner. The governor remains committed to fostering constructive dialogues and lending an open ear to public concerns, aiming to strike a balance in respecting cultural diversity and maintaining social harmony.
