Thailand is currently grappling with relentless rainfall that has covered 44 provinces, including Bangkok, as reported by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). With a dense 80% rainfall blanketing the area, heavy downpour is expected to continue for the ensuing 24 hours, making landslides and flash floods concerning possibilities, particularly in lower-lying and hillside areas.
While the downpour is mainly concentrated in the low northern, northeastern, central, and west provinces, including Bangkok, the eastern and southern regions aren’t entirely spared either. There’s an anticipatory alert of accumulated downpours leading to sudden flash floods and landslides, due to the foreseen heavy rainfall over the eastern region.
A moderate monsoon trough intersecting the lower north-central, east, and lower northeastern areas and extending to the low-pressure zone off the southern coast of Vietnam is at the root of the rainfall. A relatively active southwestern monsoon persists over the upper Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
Vigorous waves of 2 to 3 metres are likely in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, heightened by thunderstorms to over three metres in places. Farther offshore in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, waves are set to rise above 2 metres while the coast is expected to witness 1 to 2 metre high waves.
Boat operators are urged to be cautious under these weather conditions and avoid thunderstorm-prone areas. Small boat operators, in particular, are recommended to keep ashore for the time being. This advice was shared by KhaoSod in light of the prevailing weather conditions.
The weather forecast for Thailand, from 6am today to 6am tomorrow, suggests thunderstorms across northern, northeastern, central, eastern and western provinces – few of these may even experience heavy rainfall. Mariners are advised to be cautious and refrain from sailing during thunderstorms.
The weather update for the northern region indicates 60% coverage of thunderstorms, heavy rain in some provinces, minimum temperature of 24-26 degrees Celsius and maximum of 35-37 degrees Celsius. These provinces include Mae Hong Son, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun.
In the northeastern region, provinces such as Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Nakhon Phanom, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Amnat Charoen, Mukdahan, Buri Ram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani might experience 70% thunderstorms and heavy rain. The temperature will range from 22-25 degrees Celsius (minimum) to 33-35 degrees Celsius (maximum).
Central provinces including Nakhon Sawan, Lopburi, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon are facing an 80% thunderstorm threat with potential heavy rain. The temperature here is expected to fluctuate between 24-26 degrees Celsius minimum and 34-36 degrees Celsius maximum.
Eastern provinces such as Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat may have 80% thunderstorms, including heavy to very heavy rain in places. The temperature ranges from 24-26 degrees Celsius (minimum) to 30-34 degrees Celsius (maximum), with swells reaching up to 2-3 meters, and even more than 3 meters high in thunderstorm-ridden areas.
Southern provinces on the East Coast, namely Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon, are likely to see a thunderstorm coverage of 60%, and heavy rain in some areas. The temperature ranges from 24-26 degrees Celsius minimum to 33-35 degrees Celsius maximum. In regions where Surat Thani province runs southward, the sea can have waves up to 2 meters high, and thunderstorms may raise the waves to over 2 meters.
In areas from Nakhon Si Thammarat province southward, sea waves can reach up to 1-2 meters high, and go over 2 meters high farther offshore. On the West Coast of the southern region, provinces such as Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket might see 60% thunderstorm coverage and heavy to very heavy rain in some places. The temperature is expected to range from 23-24 degrees Celsius (minimum) to 30-34 degrees Celsius (maximum).
Bangkok and its vicinity are forecasted to see 80% thunderstorm coverage with heavy rain in some areas. The temperature here is expected to fluctuate between 26-27 degrees Celsius minimum and 33-35 degrees Celsius maximum.
