An assertive stride towards economic rejuvenation was showcased by Thai Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin when he suggested a ground-breaking free-trade treaty with the Gulf Cooperation Council. This crucial proposal was unveiled in the face of Prince Mohammed bin Salman during their significant encounter held at the opulent Ritz Carlton in Riyadh, as revealed by the government’s mouthpiece, Chai Watcharong.
The reason for Thavisin’s visit to Riyadh was much more than a routine diplomatic mission; it marked his participation in the inaugural Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit, an event of utmost economic and strategic importance.
Alongside this seminal proposal, Thavisin took a moment to express Thailand’s heartfelt gratitude towards Saudi Arabia, given the monumental revival of diplomatic ties between the two countries after a wide-spreading chill staged for decades.
Not limiting himself to expressing mere words of gratitude, Srettha further pushed the envelope by endorsing Thailand’s robust backing for Saudi Arabia’s ambitious pursuits. The Asian nation has shown strong favoritism to Saudi Arabia’s candidature for the widely recognized World Expo 2030 and the internationally popular FIFA World Cup in 2034.
Going a step further, Thavisin conveyed Thailand’s readiness to play the role of host country to the first of many Saudi-Thai Coordination Council meetups. This would allow both nations to scrutinize their collaborative efforts in core areas like political and consular affairs, investment dynamics, homeland security, the flourishing tourism sector, the fast-evolving economic landscape, and bilateral trade.
Responsible for supervising the burgeoning security cooperation between these two nations are Thailand’s premier establishments – the Defence Industry and Energy Centre, alongside the Defence Technology Institute. This vital piece of information was shared by Chai Watcharong.
The Thai PM went on to express his nation’s gratitude to Saudi Arabia for providing a secure place for the sizable Thai workforce consisting of over 6,000 workers in Riyadh. In a fitting reciprocation, Saudi Arabia graciously pledged their utmost support in providing needed assistance to Thai hostages ensnared amidst the Israel-Hamas quarrel in Gaza.
