With an air of solemn dignity, Gen Songwit Noonphakdi, the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, presided over a poignant send-off ceremony for a dedicated contingent of military engineers set to embark on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The event was enveloped in a sense of purpose and national pride, marking the departure of 273 highly trained engineers who will lend their expertise to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) starting this Sunday.

In an elaborate ceremony that spoke volumes about Thailand’s commitment to global peace, Gen Songwit lauded the efforts of these individuals, who form the fifth group of military personnel dispatched for this noble cause. Among them are 256 soldiers from the esteemed Royal Thai Army, including 28 trailblazing female military personnel, demonstrating inclusivity and the progressive stance of the Thai Armed Forces. Additionally, 17 other military experts will join this vibrant team.

“These brave souls are stepping into the shoes of their compatriots who returned home last July,” Gen Songwit said, reflecting on the cycle of dedication and service. The initial group of heroes will set forth this Sunday, while the rest of their comrades will follow on September 6th, ensuring a seamless transition and continuous support for this critical mission.

UNMISS, established amidst the turmoil of a newly independent South Sudan—since its secession on July 9, 2011—has been a beacon of stability in a land plagued by relentless strife. The mission aims to restore peace and aid in the nation-building process, tasks that the Thai military engineers are more than equipped to handle.

Gen Songwit emphasized that Thailand’s involvement in international peacekeeping is both an honor and a testament to the country’s commitment to global solidarity. “It is a source of immense pride for us to partake in such an impactful mission,” he proclaimed, noting that these assignments not only bolster global peace but also significantly enrich the professional knowledge and experiential learning of Thai armed personnel.

He went on to highlight the rigorous standards that Thai military engineers have consistently met and exceeded, gaining respect and validation from international partners, including the United Nations. “Our engineers have demonstrated their mettle time and again, validating their capability and earning the trust of our global allies,” Gen Songwit remarked, radiating confidence and pride in their impending mission.

As these gallant engineers prepare to contribute to the monumental task of fostering peace and stability in South Sudan, they carry with them not just the technical skills honed through intense training, but also the hopes and pride of an entire nation. Their journey symbolizes a commitment to building a better world, brick by brick, nation by nation.

The ceremony was not just a send-off; it was a powerful reminder of the shared human spirit that binds us across boundaries—a spirit that says, regardless of where we come from, peace and stability are a universal right worth fighting for.
