Recent wave activity of unexpected magnitude, exacerbated by an emerging global issue of rising sea levels, resulted in the severe deterioration of a key cement road along the cherished Hua Hin beach of the Satun province in Thailand. This unfortunate accident has had direct repercussions for the well-being of 2,500 households residing in ten otherwise tranquil local villages. The damage to the road surface has imparted grave disruptions to the routine transportation needs of these communities.
In a swift response to the urgent cries for help from local authorities, Jamras Hongsai, the dedicated head of the La-ngu Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, along with a team of local disaster prevention and mitigation officials, rushed to the scene without hesitation. They were taken aback by an overpowering surge, a turbulent manifestation of the ocean’s wrath, which had taken a heavy toll on the integrity of the cement road leading to the scenic beachside villages. Heartbreakingly, an estimated 80-metre stretch of the once-relaxed Hua Hin Beach pathway, also known as Village No.1 of Tha Chamuang Subdistrict within the La-ngu District, was rendered virtually unusable. This pathway was once a lifeline for the local fisherfolk and an essential route for the transportation of fresh seafood, serving a good portion of approximately 500 households dependent on it.
The committed head, Hongsai, promised swift action to mobilize the technical team of La-ngu Subdistrict Administrative Organisation as well as the Subdistrict’s disaster prevention and mitigation team. Their immediate mission is to expedite a comprehensive assessment of the affected region. They have not restricted their focus solely to this specific spot; they are also analyzing other locations along the picturesque coastline that may also be vulnerable to erosion from the relentless sea and unpredictable waves. Their aim is to provide an accurate evaluation of the circumference of the devastation and, subsequently, expedite the essential rectification work. To ensure the safety of the residents in the interim, they’ve strategically placed signage marking the damaged course. Their plea to the households living nearby is for them to exercise utmost caution if they choose to venture along it. They are also pulling all stops to provisionally establish alternative routes for the affected 500 households amidst this trying time, as reported by renowned publication KhaoSod.
The current predicament, unfortunately, extends beyond a single mishap; it has sprawling effects across the entire La-ngu Subdistrict. As of now, the devastating effects of the furious wave activity have reached ten villages, impacting the lives of roughly 2,500 households. The situation couldn’t be grimmer, as amid these reports of road collapse, there was an additional catastrophe to note. A segment of the Luang Paeng Road, still under construction, disastrously fell apart, leading to the untimely deaths of two individuals and causing physical harm to 17 more.
