The sun rose over bustling Phuket yesterday, casting its warm glow on a well-orchestrated dance of democracy as the registration for mayoral and municipal council candidates sprang to life. An air of vibrant energy filled the city as potential leaders and their supporters converged with high hopes and even higher spirits, all eager to stake their claim in the upcoming elections. The stage was set, and the drama unfolded with flair, a political spectacle befitting of Phuket’s lively character.

With the official curtain-raiser set for an 8:30 a.m. start, anticipation was already brewing as early as yesterday, March 31, when two prominent political teams rolled into the Phuket City Municipality grounds. Suphot La-ongphet, a familiar face and the charismatic force behind the Rak Phuket Party, harnessed his experience as a former Phuket Town Deputy Mayor to snag the enviable number one slot on the ballot.

Not to be outdone, Phisit Sutthichindaowong, steering the Phuket chapter of the Young Turks Party with bold ambition, claimed the second spot in this high-stakes draw. The good-natured rivalry continued as their respective municipal council hopefuls lined up, with numbers allotted like lottery tickets—Rak Phuket bearing one to six and Young Turks sweeping seven to twelve.

In a heartwarming display of support, well-wishers showered candidates with florals aplenty—flowers and marigold garlands—each bloom a symbol of encouragement and belief in a brighter tomorrow.

Further down the coast, Patong Municipality mirrored the spirit of competition with its own trio of contenders. Pakrit Keesin, championing the Rak Patong Team, made his presence known, followed closely by the dynamic Chalermluck Kebsup of the Patong Fah Mai Team, and the creative force of Lalita Maneesri leading the Patong Creative Team. In this spirited derby to determine the ballot order, it was Kebsup who drew the prized number one, followed by Maneesri and Keesin respectfully filling the number two and three slots.

Over in picturesque Chalong, Thanaporn Triwong, the commanding voice behind the Ji Nui Party, who had just concluded a term as the Chalong Mayor, clinched the top ballot position. Right on his heels, former long-standing Chalong Mayor Samran Jindapol of the Chalong Kao Mai Party gracefully accepted the second slot, as throngs of enthusiastic supporters rallied behind their favorite contenders, adding momentum to the electoral firestorm.

All eyes are now fixed on May 11, when the municipal elections will roll out across ten bustling locations in Phuket, from vibrant Phuket Town itself to the equally politically charged Patong Municipality, weaving through sub-district municipalities like Ratsada, Wichit, and the charming seaside escape of Rawai. The stakes are high, and voter turnout predicted to match, as officials report fervent interest that transcends mere numbers—this election is poised to redefine Phuket’s political landscape with its potential to usher in real change.

In the name of electoral integrity, a nationwide alcohol ban will cast a temporary dry spell from 6 p.m. on May 10 until 6 p.m. on May 11, a sobering reminder of the civic duty at hand.

This buzzing political chapter, eagerly chronicled by The Phuket News, signals more than a mere election; it is a testament to Phuket’s evolving governance tapestry, each candidate a thread, weaving tales of hope, ambition, and the promise of prosperity. As the first notes of the democratic symphony sound off, Phuket waits with bated breath for the crescendo that is the municipal elections.

Alcohol ban during elections is quite sensible. Focus should be on making informed decisions, not celebrating.

    • Kerry Davis April 1, 2025

It’s a balance, really. While banning alcohol seems wise, isn’t it still the voter’s responsibility to make smart choices?

  3. Luis April 1, 2025

Do you think these events actually impact the local economy, or is it all just show and no go?

Phuket should be careful with how it elects leaders. We need someone who understands both local culture and tourism dynamics.

  13. Beth April 1, 2025

Is it just me, or do these political rallies feel more like a festival than serious political events?

    • Lucy April 1, 2025

I noticed that too! Lots of pageantry but let’s hope it leads to substantive discussions.

  14. Ravi123 April 1, 2025
