On a crisp morning in Nakhon Si Thammarat, the air was heavy with anticipation and the scent of determination as Pranee Danwattananusorn, a woman of unwavering resolve, stood amongst a sea of sympathetic faces outside the Government House in Bangkok. Clutching a photo of her husband, Surachai Danwattananusorn, who had vanished into the thin air of mystery, she was the embodiment of hope during a protest in February 2019. The image, poignant and profound, spoke volumes of a love that refused to fade amidst the shadows of disappearance (Bangkok Post File Photo).
In an atmosphere charged with expectancy, a court in the historic city of Nakhon Si Thammarat delivered a verdict that was a whisper of comfort in the deafening silence of the unknown. The ruling declared Surachai Danwattananusorn, a fervent activist last heard from in 2018 after seeking exile in Laos, as officially missing. Emerging from the courtroom on Monday, this decree was more than legal jargon to Pranee Danwattananusorn; it was a key to unlocking the shackles that had restrained her ability to manage her husband’s assets and bring a semblance of order to their familial matters. This development was highlighted by the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), a beacon of hope for many who seek justice in the shadows.
Pranee, a testament to unwavering love and steadfast resolve, had embarked on a relentless quest for answers regarding her husband and his compatriots, echoing the anguish and tireless spirit of countless others who vanished without a trace. She filed a petition to declare him missing on a day marked by sombre reflection, December 23 of the preceding year, narrated the TLHR with solemnity.
Surrounded by whispers of the past and echoes of what could have been, Surachai – also lovingly known as Surachai Sae Dan – would be igniting the candles of his 80th birthday, if fate had not dealt its cruel hand. Pranee, amidst the storm of emotions and uncertainty, harbors the painful suspicion that her beloved may no longer walk this earth.
The saga of Surachai is woven with threads of defiance and resilience; born in Nakhon Si Thammarat, he was a voice that roared against the silencing. Fleeing to Laos with a duo of like-minded souls following the seismic shifts of the May 2014 military coup, Surachai transformed the digital airwaves into his stage, launching online radio broadcasts that held the military regime of Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha and the monarchy in critical scrutiny.
Tragically, the curtain fell upon his two associates in December 2018 under the most macabre of circumstances. Police reports painted a grim tableau: their bodies were found disemboweled, encased in concrete, and consigned to the depths of the Mekong River, hidden within the coarse embrace of hemp bags. The discoveries were made in quick succession, first in the That Phanom district of Nakhon Phanom province, followed by another in Muang, weaving a tapestry of terror and despair.
The grief-stricken silence that greeted friends and family was a chilling testament to Surachai’s disappearance. Rumors swirled like the river’s currents, suggesting he too might have been swept away by dark deeds, a victim to the unwritten laws of vigilantes.
Despite the agony of uncertainty and the cry for truth, efforts to coax the Thai authorities into unraveling this tapestry of sorrow have been met with a disheartening stillness. Surachai, once imprisoned for his bold critique of the establishment under the lese-majeste laws and subsequently embraced by the mercy of a royal pardon in October 2013, had dared to dream of change. Even as the promise of freedom became a specter in the wake of the 2014 coup, his spirit, indomitable and fierce, chose the path of exile over silence in Laos.
Embark on this journey through the heart of Thailand’s political labyrinth and the enigmatic whispers of the Mekong. This is the story of Surachai Danwattananusorn, a tale of love, loss, and the undying flame of hope that burns in the darkness, daring to challenge the night.
