Thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals, their allies, and political leaders took to the streets of Bangkok on Sunday to celebrate Pride Month and promote gender equality. The parade, only the second official Pride event in the country, saw attendees wave rainbow flags with messages of inclusivity and love. This year’s attendance surpassed 50,000 people, more than double last year’s event, according to Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
Among the political figures joining the parade was Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the progressive Move Forward party, which aims to lead a coalition following their success in the May 14 general election. The party emerged as the favorite choice to end nearly a decade of military and military-backed government rule. Speaking to reporters at the Parade, Limjaroenrat pledged support for several key legislations aimed at fostering equality.
“Once the government is formed, we will support the Marriage Equality Act, Gender Identity Act, and several others, including welfare,” Limjaroenrat said. “These few things will make the celebration of diversity in Pride Month into pride always.”
The coalition, consisting of eight political parties, has collectively pledged to pass laws such as the Marriage Equality Act, ensuring equal rights for all couples regardless of gender. This comes after the draft law and related legislation were stalled in parliament under the previous government.
Although Thailand boasts one of Asia’s most open and visible lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, many activists argue that the country’s laws and traditional institutions have not yet adapted to reflect evolving social attitudes. As it stands, there is still widespread discrimination against the LGBT community and same-sex couples.
With political figures like Limjaroenrat taking a stand in favor of inclusivity and equality, the future appears bright for the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand. The Pride parade not only showcased the support for equal rights, but it also served as a beacon of hope and celebration for the diverse and resilient community. The event highlighted the need for continued progress on the path toward equality and the importance of ongoing advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand.
