During the first quarter of this year, Thailand witnessed a significant surge in its rice exports, reaching 2.06 million tonnes with a total value of 38.06 billion baht. This marked a remarkable year-on-year increase of 29.26%. A significant portion of these exports, precisely 16.38%, were purchased by Iraq. Other top importers of Thai rice included Indonesia (13.08%), the United States (8.62%), South Africa (8.24%), and Senegal (5.86%).
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his gratitude to the agencies responsible for raising awareness about Thai rice development, which played a crucial role in elevating rice exports in the international market. He also urged these agencies to continue maintaining high standards and top-notch quality, in order to preserve the esteemed reputation of Thai rice in the global market.
The popularity of Thai rice across the globe can be attributed to its distinctive characteristics and exceptional production quality. In order to further enhance the standard of rice production and boost exports, the Department of Foreign Trade organized the “Thailand Rice Convention 2023” event in Chiang Rai, held on April 24-25.
The main objectives of the event were to enlighten farmers about cultivating various rice species, ensuring quality control before export, and updating them on the current global market situation. Additionally, this event aligns perfectly with the Thai Rice Strategy (2020-2024), which aims to establish Thailand as a global leader in rice production and marketing.
To achieve this ambitious goal, the Commerce Ministry has set a target of exporting between 7.5 million to 8 million tonnes of Thai rice in the current year. With all hands on deck and a clear commitment to innovation, the future of Thai rice exports appears bright, promising substantial benefits for the nation’s economy and solidifying its status as a major player in the global rice market.
Moreover, the Thai government’s dedication to promoting sustainable farming practices and maintaining high-quality standards not only ensures a bright future for the country’s rice production but also enhances its overall international credibility. As Thailand continues to foster the growth of its rice industry, it is well on its way to becoming a dominant force in the world of global rice trade.
