As twilight fades on the evening of December 14, an astronomical spectacle begins to unfurl above us. The grandest of meteor showers, the Geminids, is set to sparkle across the December sky, mesmerizing stargazers from dusk till the first light of dawn on December 15. With a promise of 120 to 150 meteors painting fiery trails through the darkness every hour, this celestial show promises to be both lavish and accessible, for no special equipment is needed—these shooting stars can be admired with the mere gift of sight.

To celebrate, the National Astronomical Research Institute (NARIT) has joined forces with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand network. Together, they’ve curated a spellbinding journey under the stars that spans over 30 bewitching spots across the nation. So grab your picnic blankets, fill your flasks with hot cocoa, and cast your eyes heavenward as the night falls. Starting at 8 p.m., these meteors will streak through the inky sky until the break of day, but they’ll be showing off their best moves after midnight in areas untouched by the city’s luminous embrace.

So, what exactly is the Geminid Meteor Shower? Simply put, it’s our planet’s annual dance with the debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Every December, Earth glides through this cosmic trail, allowing bits of debris to collide with our atmosphere, where they burn up in a glorious blaze. The shower gets its name from the constellation of Gemini, the Twins, hence ‘Geminids,’ where the meteors appear to originate in the sky.

To witness this astronomical ballet, look towards the east as darkness descends, just around 8:00 p.m., and you’ll see the Gemini constellation making its grand entrance. This year, the stage is perfectly set for the Geminids’ performance, with the new moon ensuring that no rogue lunar light will upstage these celestial dancers.
