The esteemed National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) and the well-known Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) have come together in an exciting venture to chart new territories in the field of “astronomical tourism”. This initiative, which involves the designation of 18 prime stargazing locations as exclusive dark sky reserves in this current year, aims to offer breathtaking night skies undiluted by the harshness of artificial light.

Heading this trailblazing initiative is Narit’s director, Saran Poshyachinda, who, along with his team, has introduced the Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand Season 2 project. This endeavour aims to highlight 18 exemplary locations spread across the nation. Each of these has been meticulously chosen as a dark sky reserve that offers an unspoilt view of the night sky.

In 2020, the TAT and Narit collectively initiated the Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand project with the noble aim of promoting dark sky tourism. This initiative also intended to raise collective awareness on the detrimental effects of light pollution. Their efforts have created ideal locations where stargazers can delight in unimpeded night-time views perfect for photography.

The past three years have seen Narit hosting over 150 astronomical activities, captivating around 100,000 avid stargazers. For the designation of dark sky reserves this year, out of the proposed 26 locations only 18 successfully met the stringent criteria set by Narit. This handful of selections comprises five national parks and thirteen private properties.

The national parks included in this league are the Mae Wong National Park located in Kamphaeng Phet, Ta Phraya National Park nestled in Sa Kaeo, Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Nan National Park within Nan and the alluring Namtok Pha Luang Forest Park in Ubon Ratchathani.

Meanwhile, those who still privately own night sky havens are the Khon Kaen Zoo, the luxurious Mela Garden Retreat Cottage Resort in Saraburi, Khirimala Eco Camp in Ratchaburi, Saengsuk Farm in Rayong, the rural wonder of Rai Khao Noi Sawana in Nakhon Ratchasima and the spectacular Ao Toh Li Viewpoint in Phangnga.

Chiang Mai brags its breathtaking seven properties in this line-up – Ton Khao Hom Ban Aom Doi (Chill Chiang Dao), the grand Villa De View Chiang Dao, Chiang Dao Farm Stay, Ban Suan Pa Pong Doi, the tranquil Teak Resort, Putoh Chiang Dao and the lush Summit Green Valley Chiangmai Country Club.

With each chosen location encapsulating the serene beauty of the night sky, the combined endeavours of Narit and TAT promise astronomical enthusiasts a breathtaking journey through the cosmos, right from the comfort of these awe-inspiring locations in Thailand.
