As the clock struck midnight on June 1st, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) sounded the alert for an expected deluge across the charming landscape of Thailand. If you’re nestled in one of the 28 provinces being forewarned—or in the bustling cityscape of Bangkok—be prepared for a soggy spectacle as heavy rain takes its dramatic stage. With moderate monsoon systems dancing across the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, it’s time for everyone to strap in and, quite literally, weather the storm.

Excitement, and let’s admit, a tad bit of apprehension, is in the air as the weather forecast unrolls the next 24 hours’ itinerary. The Upper parts of Thailand, particularly the verdant northern and upper northeastern regions, are slated to receive generous offerings of heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms, ever dramatic and unpredictable, are expected to make surprise appearances in some southern locales, reminding residents to be vigilant against potential hazards this rainfall might runoff.

The Andaman Sea, with its usual tranquility, will turn into a vibrant performer under moderate sea conditions. Waves will gracefully rise and fall, reaching heights of 1 to 2 meters, and could exceed 2 meters when thunderstorms decide to join the maritime party. For those in the maritime community, especially navigating through the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, it’s time to steer with utmost caution and give those stormy sections a wide berth.

In Northern Thailand, thunder and downpour are predicted to cover a sprawling 60% of the area, with heavy stretches visitations expected in Tak, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Daytime temperatures are setting a comfy screen of 23 to 25 degrees Celsius, with warmer applause running anywhere from 32 to 35°C. Gentle southwest winds, clocking between 5 to 15 kilometres per hour, will accompany the show.

The Northeast too, prepares as thunderstorms tiptoe into 40% of the region, especially making their presence felt in Bueng Kan and Nakhon Phanom. Temperatures here will likewise be playing with the figures of 23 to 26°C, climbing to a maximum of 32 to 35°C, with a pleasant southern breeze backing them at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

Central Thailand might not be left out of this spectacle, as 40% will host thunderstorms, particularly seen in the drama sites of Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lopburi, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi. The atmospheric stage will cool to 24 to 26°C, warming up to 33 to 36°C, as southwest winds whirl around at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

The Eastern Region is set for a wash as well, with thunderstorms sweeping over a notable 60% of the area, bringing their performance to Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will meander from 24 to 29°C, with upper ranges of 33 to 35°C, while the breezy southwest winds dance at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves will form a snug curl of about a meter, performing a wilder reprise of over 2 meters as the storms roll in.

On the southern east coast, a second act involves 20% of the territory, particularly Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Yala, and Narathiwat, preparing for thunderstorms. With temperatures strumming to the tune of 24 to 27°C and rising highs of 34 to 36°C, these areas will welcome southwest winds tickling the tempestuous strings at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves will mirror the skies, maintaining about a meter and crescendoing past 2 meters during thunderous flair.

Meanwhile, on the south’s west coast starring Ranong, Phang Nga, and Krabi, thunderstorms are booked for 20% of the stage. Temperatures are foreseen between a mild 25 and 28°C, reaching impressively to highs of 33 to 35°C. Here, southwest winds will accelerate their tempo between 15 to 35 kilometres per hour, stirring sea waves to showcase heights of 1 to 2 meters, especially when thunder brings its robust encore.

Ah, Bangkok. Part expectant, part wary. Thunderstorms may grace the city’s weather, claiming 60% of its skyline. Here, in the heart of electrifying pulse, temperatures serenade between 25 to 27°C, with jubilant highs touching the chords of 34 to 36°C. Swirling southwest winds will likely take a subtle bow, moving between 10 to 20 kilometres per hour as the city waits, watches, and weather-proof exercises a slight reprieve.

I wish I could enjoy the rain, but flooding is my main concern. Houses need better drainage systems.

Agreed. More investment into infrastructure would reduce flood risks significantly.

As someone who frequently sails the Andaman Sea, these predictions are crucial. Safety first, always. Nautical speed limits should be enforced.

    • SailorSally June 1, 2025

Good point! With over two-meter-high waves, it’s not worth the risk. Better dock and wait it out.

Sometimes we underestimate the power of the sea. Nature’s force should always be respected.
