As the clock neared midnight on May 20, chaos erupted on Road 4027 in Pa Khlok, Phuket, casting a somber shadow over the usually serene night. The bustling road, typically dotted with locals and the hum of motorcycles, became the site of a heart-wrenching tragedy that left one woman dead and a community reeling.

The unfortunate incident involved a 32-year-old man named Piyanat, who chose to defy the flow of traffic while heavily intoxicated. This perilous decision led to a collision that ended the life of 42-year-old Thanyawat, a woman simply commuting home, perhaps to her family, perhaps to her dreams unrealized. According to Police Colonel Yutthaphon Wathaseth of the Thalang District Police Station, the tragic encounter occurred near a local petrol station, a place now etched with sorrow and the painful reminder of a life lost too soon.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene, finding Piyanat, bleeding and bruised, struggling with the consequences of his reckless decisions. By his side was his vehicle of destruction – a motorcycle, with parts scattered like the night’s shattered peace. Witnesses at the site acted swiftly, transporting Thanyawat to Thalang Hospital, where the fight for her life was tragically lost. Meanwhile, Piyanat was also taken to the hospital, where tests confirmed his blood alcohol level was alarmingly high at 130 milligrammes percent.

Amidst the chaos, Piyanat admitted to the authorities that prior to the crash, he had indulged in alcohol—a tale that, regrettably, is all too familiar. With alcohol clouding his judgement, he rode against the traffic, heading towards his abode near the Tha Ruea Market. But the journey turned catastrophic as he collided with Thanyawat, an innocent casualty caught in the crossfire of his poor choices.

Though legal proceedings took a pause due to Piyanat’s medical treatment, he found himself in custody by the early hours of the following morning. With law enforcement now actively pursuing justice, the focus remains on ensuring such reckless behavior faces appropriate consequences. The silence of Road 4027 today echoes the community’s yearning for safety and responsibility.

This accident stirs echoes of a similar incident from the previous year involving a Kuwaiti man in Pattaya. His unlawful journey against traffic ended in chaos, injuring multiple riders. It seems this reckless, cross-country act of defying traffic norms isn’t as isolated as one might hope. Each incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the life-altering consequences that can follow.

As this story unfolds alongside numerous others across the news landscape of Thailand—from business shifts, like Robinhood’s latest move, to the interception of crystal meth on the northern borders—the shared human narratives connect us all. Recent tales from Pattaya, the bustling streets of Bangkok, and the serene lakes of Songkhla paint a picture of a nation vibrant and varied, yet scarred by common challenges.

In a world where headlines often disappear into the noise, may the tragic loss on Road 4027 serve as a persistent reminder—drawing focus to the thorny issues of road safety and the unequivocal stance against driving under the influence. The roads that lead us home should bind us in safety, inviting us to navigate with care, and above all, respect for life.

It infuriates me how some people still think drinking and driving is okay!

People will always risk it after a night out—it’s human nature. Punishments need to be more severe.

    • Sara L May 21, 2025

Maybe, but saying ‘it’s human nature’ feels like making excuses for poor behavior.

      • James Bond May 21, 2025

Not making excuses, just pointing out why laws need to be tougher!

Living near Road 4027, safety needs to be prioritized more with regular checkpoints!

That’s important, but consistent enforcement is the key.

Education in schools about the consequences of drunk driving could save lives in the future. Ignorance is our worst enemy.

    • tim-theo May 21, 2025

If only this kind of comprehensive education was prioritized!

      • Teacher Lynn May 21, 2025

True. It’s about creating a new generation that values safety first.

  8. Pete B. May 21, 2025

I don’t understand why society doesn’t prioritize road safety as much as they do gun violence. Both are killers.

    • Emily R. May 21, 2025

You’re right! It’s about taking these issues seriously enough to provoke change.

  9. RiderJoe May 21, 2025

Riding a motorcycle under the influence is like playing Russian roulette. People should know better by now.

  10. Clara May 21, 2025

Heartbreaking reality. Thanyawat didn’t deserve this and it shouldn’t have happened.

    • nivrihS May 21, 2025

It’s devastating. Her family must be going through an unfathomable loss.
