In the bustling city of Bangkok, a heartbreaking tale unfolded within the sterile walls of a hospital, leaving a family in a state of despair and a young girl’s future forever altered. It all began innocuously enough for nine-year-old Nuengthida “Fifa” Mungbuatong, whose name now echoes in legal corridors and the hearts of those who’ve heard her story. The young girl was simply seeking relief from a bout of diarrhoea when she was wheeled into Luang Phor Taweesak Chutinataro Uthit Hospital back in February.

What should have been a routine visit became a catastrophic turning point—the kind that no family ever anticipates. Fifa was administered an injection of adrenaline, a move intended to stabilize her blood pressure. However, it resulted in a violent surge that would deplete blood supply to her brain, blurring the line between life and a more devastating reality. She rapidly spiraled into a suffocating cycle of seizures, her small heart valiantly fighting against odds stacked unkindly against it.

By the dawn of February 17, tragedy had fully blossomed. Her heart had stilled, and though doctors managed to coax it back to life, she was whisked away to a second hospital in critical condition, now battling fluid-filled lungs and an erratic heartbeat. The days that followed would paint a progressively grim picture. As the calendar pages turned from February 19 to 20, the light that once danced in Fifa’s eyes extinguished. She was rendered sightless, her voice silent, her limbs inert.

This cruel twist of fate, as explained to her shocked and grieving parents, was traced back to the adrenaline injection—an admission of a life permanently changed at the hands of those sworn to protect it. The weight of this knowledge was compounded by another blow: the realization that further medical care had drifted beyond the reach of their 30-baht social welfare scheme.

Renowned lawyer Ananchai Chaiyadej, who has taken up the family’s plight with fervor, shared this sequence of heartbreak and hope with the public. Using the power of social media, he relayed the critical details and highlighted what he termed a grave error. He also issued a plea for medical experts to rally around Fifa’s cause, to possibly reverse the bleak trajectory her life has taken.

Striding side by side with Fifa’s parents, Ananchai approached the Ministry of Public Health, determined to seek justice and ensure that the discrepancies of that fateful day do not fade into the corridors of forgotten incidents. With the ministry’s promise to probe deeply into this troubling case, there is a flicker of hope amidst the prevailing shadows.

The city of Bangkok continues to hum and pulse as it does, oblivious to its own chaos. Yet in the heart of the city and the story of one family, there’s a hushed prayer—one of healing, accountability, and a future where stories like Fifa’s compel a change in the system, ensuring that such tragic errors are held to the light, examined, and ultimately, corrected.

How can a hospital make such a blunder with something as simple as diarrhoea?

Was it really just a simple case though? Maybe there were complications.

The welfare scheme clearly isn’t providing the coverage families need.

True. Cost shouldn’t prevent access to life-saving interventions.

The burden on doctors is intense, yes, but this can’t be an excuse for negligence.

Adrenaline? Seems like a mistake anyone could make in a high-pressure moment.

    • modern_med April 12, 2025

That’s the problem though, these high-stakes environments exacerbate human error.

    • anita_m April 12, 2025

Mistakes are human, but systems should ideally minimize these chances.
