In a dramatic turn of events, two popular television hosts—Damrong Phuttan and Narakorn Tiyayon—have stepped into the legal limelight by filing a police complaint against none other than the Auditor-General, Montien Charoenphol. The charges? Negligence and dereliction of duty following the catastrophic collapse of the State Auditor Office’s (SAO) building which caused an uproar and raised several eyebrows since March 28th this year.

The collapse of the 2.1-billion-baht building wasn’t just any incident; it was a debacle that has left citizens reeling and looking for answers as taxpayer money seemed to vanish quicker than a magician’s rabbit. Both Damrong and Narakorn took it upon themselves to voice public outrage, lodging their complaint at the Bang Sue police station. Not only have they taken aim at Mr. Montien, but they’ve also called out former auditor-general Prachak Boonyang, whose signature on a contractual deal with the construction firm ITD-CREC now draws scrutiny.

With over a month slipping by since the unfortunate event, Ms. Narakorn expressed disappointment at Mr. Montien’s apparent lack of public accountability. The world waits, and so does she, for an apology or any hint of responsibility. Her co-comrade, Mr. Damrong, echoes this sentiment, lamenting the colossal waste of public funds and urging those in power to step up and own the consequences.

But the saga doesn’t stop there. Rescue operations continue with a grim tally rising—yesterday saw the discovery of 13 more bodies amidst the wreckage, pushing the death toll to a staggering 74. Nine bear the scars of injury, while the fates of around 20 souls remain uncertain, swallowed by the rubble and chaos.

Rescuers pivoted their focus to Zone D, where heavy machinery unearthed a tragic conglomeration of remains, marking 41 grim discoveries in the area. Suriyachai Rawiwan, with steely resolve, oversees these efforts as director of City Hall’s disaster prevention and mitigation office. The challenges are mountainous, both literally and figuratively, as access to Zone C is hampered by towering structural remnants and foreboding instability.

It’s feared that the third-floor walkway may have plunged into the abyss below, potentially concealing more victims within its depths. Rescuers are intensifying their reach, grappling with machinery to breach these unyielding barriers, all in the hope of bringing closure to frantic families.

Theories abound as to what triggered this calamity, with investigations zooming in on the building’s elevator shafts. These shafts, now shrouded in suspicion, may well be the genesis of the fall. Walls that should have stood robust were instead reportedly wafer-thin, their fragility a suspect factor in this tragedy. Engineers from the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning are on high alert, ready to delve into the evidence lurking within these constricted confines.

The inquiry continues to develop, as the public watches with bated breath, eager for justice and transparency in a case that has shaken the very foundations—both literal and metaphorical—of Thailand’s civic trust. The story unfolds, much like the pursuit for answers and accountability, in a nation searching for solace amidst the rubble.

It’s not just about the year, it’s about corruption! People in power ignore rules for money; it’s happening everywhere, not just Thailand.

If elevator shafts were the problem, shouldn’t the contractors be held accountable instead?

    • Sarah L. May 3, 2025

Contractors, auditors, everyone tied to this project should be investigated. It’s never just one department’s fault in these giant projects.

      • grower134 May 3, 2025

True, but the blame game can also be a way to avoid consequences. Let’s hope for transparency.

It’s not a surprise. Infrastructure issues are hidden until it’s too late. They probably saved costs at people’s expense.

Exactly, it’s a systemic issue. Oversight exists just for formality in many cases.

      • Larry D May 3, 2025

And no one wants to take the responsibility when something goes wrong. It’s a broken system.

Why are they focusing so much on Zone D? Aren’t there other areas that need attention too?

    • Surachai_P May 3, 2025

Zone D is probably where they believe the most people got trapped. It’s crucial to prioritize.
