In a chilling turn of events that seem ripped from the pages of a thriller, a man allegedly torched his own home while his wife and grandchild were still inside, before making a hasty getaway. The heartbroken wife, Sunan Chanthapram, unable to grasp the gravity of the situation, tearfully recounted how her husband had frequently made such threats, yet, she never believed he would act on them.

The night of March 5th was anything but ordinary for the residents of Village 19, Ban Don Sanam, in the Nong Han district of Udon Thani. As the clock struck 9 PM, a call that would set the town abuzz with disbelief was placed to the police station. Police Lieutenant Piyanat Akkaraphumphol, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at the Nong Han Police Station, swiftly received the report of the blaze consuming house number 6. Positioned in the quaint and often quiet Nong Han Subdistrict, the scene rapidly escalated as responders, including the Udon Thani Promotion Foundation and the local fire services, sped to the scene.

They arrived to a sight that could only be depicted as apocalyptic—a two-story structure made of a concrete-wood mix engulfed in voracious flames that roared into the night sky. The diligent efforts of the firefighters lasted a tense hour before the inferno was quenched, but alas, the house had already been consigned to ashes.

Identified by his 54-year-old wife, Panya Somsri, also 54, was named as the alleged culprit. Married for decades with three children, their relationship had apparently deteriorated as of late, largely due to Panya’s growing reliance on drugs and alcohol. Sunan revealed that the home, now reduced to cinders, belonged to her sister who resided in South Thailand. During her absence, Sunan and her family dwelled there, until the sister’s return had stirred routine conflicts fueled by Panya’s intoxication.

It was these escalating tensions and Panya’s violent outbursts, sometimes leaving Sunan with bruises, that culminated in this incendiary act. “We’ve been together for many years,” Sunan lamented, her voice heavy with disbelief as she reflected on a tumultuous relationship filled with both love and fear. The night before the catastrophic fire he had assaulted her, and now, his ominous threats had become a haunting reality:

“I will burn you alive. I will burn you and our grandchild,” Panya had declared, with Sunan believing it to be a mere drunken rant.

Fortuitously, fate intervened. Sunan usually found refuge in the very room where the fire had sparked, but on that particular night, her grandchild’s whim to sleep in a nearby house with Sunan’s sister offered an unsuspected shelter from the flames.

Warunee Chanthapram, Sunan’s 59-year-old sister, attested to the ownership of the now-destroyed home. Her return from the south of Thailand had been marred by daily confrontations with the often belligerent Panya, leading her to restrict him from the house, relegating him to sleep in the fields instead. Despite her protective measures, none could have anticipated his desperate actions.

As investigators delve deeper into the particulars of this tragic episode, forensic teams are set to scour the charred remains for clues. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend Panya, who remains at large, in order to face the consequences of his fiery outburst—a cautionary tale that leaves a neighborhood scarred and a family in tatters, their safety and trust burned away with the flickering light of that fateful night.

I can’t believe someone would actually set their own house on fire with family inside. What was he thinking?

    • Sammy91 March 6, 2025

It’s terrifying. But if you look at his history with drugs and alcohol, it’s clear he was in a bad place mentally.

      • AnnaBanana March 6, 2025

That doesn’t excuse his actions though. There’s no justification for putting your family in such danger.

    • Joe March 6, 2025

Absolutely, Anna. No matter how low someone gets, they need to find help before things go this far.

  2. Larry D March 6, 2025

I wonder if the authorities had been alerted about his threats before. Could this tragedy have been prevented?

    • Grower134 March 6, 2025

From what’s reported, it seems like threats were common from him. But can the police really intervene with just threats?

    • Larry D March 6, 2025

That’s the issue, isn’t it? Until something happens, often nothing is done. It’s the sad reality.

  3. Lucy Loo March 6, 2025

This just breaks my heart. That grandchild was so lucky to be staying elsewhere that night.

  4. Carlos March 6, 2025

These stories remind me of how important it is for family members to speak up and seek help in toxic situations.

    • Sarah B March 6, 2025

True. But it’s often not that simple. There’s fear, shame, and sometimes love complicating things.

    • Carlos March 6, 2025

Completely agree, Sarah. But hopefully, sharing stories like these raises awareness for those in similar situations.

  5. Ricky March 6, 2025

Honestly, it’s a shame the authorities couldn’t catch him immediately. Sounds like he knew what he was doing.

    • Larry Davis March 6, 2025

No doubt. He probably had an escape plan ready for when he eventually did something drastic.

    • Ricky March 6, 2025

Yeah, bet he knew the area well and probably hiding somewhere nearby even now.

  6. Phil March 6, 2025

This is distressing. People with substance abuse problems need more support systems.

  7. JoJo March 6, 2025

I blame weak societal support. When people with abuse issues have nowhere to turn, these situations escalate.

  8. Emily March 6, 2025

I’m deeply worried about how conditions like this lead to violent outcomes. Awareness is key!

    • Joe March 6, 2025

Agreed, Emily. Maybe if more people knew the signs and were able to intervene, things might change.

  9. Wendy March 6, 2025

Both sides are victims here, the family who faced danger and the man who fell into such desperate measures.

  10. MaxPower March 6, 2025

We can’t let these isolated incidents become the norm. Society needs to take mental health issues more seriously.

  11. Kendra March 6, 2025

The sister did the right thing by trying to keep him out. Who knows what would have happened otherwise?

  12. Todd A. March 6, 2025

The more we hear these stories, the more it rings true that intervention is necessary sooner rather than later.

  13. Greg March 6, 2025

My heart goes out to Sunan and her family. It’s a miracle they survived this horror.

    • Joe March 6, 2025

For sure, Greg. It’s stories like these that make us appreciate every day we have with our loved ones.

  14. Ashley M March 6, 2025

It’s a chilling reminder of how quickly things can escalate. Domestic issues must be taken seriously.
